BMW Will Match Cash for Clunkers Rebate on New Diesels

Now, the Cash for Clunkers deals get interesting.
The program, which offers Americans up to $4,500 toward the purchase of a new car when buyers trade in an older, less-efficient car to be scrapped, officially launches today. Automakers have begun to announce a number of promotions tied to the program.
Motor Trend reports, "Until the end of August, BMW will provide $4500 in incentives toward the purchase of a 335d or X5 xDrive35d." The incentives, which the German automaker is calling an "eco-credit," apply whether or not the buyer is able to turn in an older car to cash in on the government's new program. After all, MT notes, the X5 doesn't qualify, since it carries a base price over $45,000. But the 335d does.
The incentives are a surprise from BMW, which usually doesn't discount its cars significantly. Autoblog notes, "When Chrysler started its new "Double CA$H For Your Old Car" promotion that included up to $4,500 in incentives on select vehicles, we weren't that surprised. After all, there are plenty of Chrysler products with at least that much cash on the hood. News that BMW is following suit with the same $4,500 in rebates on the purchase of a diesel powered 335d or X5 is a bit more surprising."
The offer may be a sign, Autoblog muses, of "a lack of acceptance for diesel-powered luxury vehicles in the US." The diesel-powered 3-Series has been a critical success, but car shoppers have not yet joined in press enthusiasm for the cars.
The offer, however, might change some minds. AutoSpies notes that buyers of the diesel-powered 3-Series "also receive a $900 tax credit" intended to stimulate sales of fuel-efficient cars. Combining the $4,500 voucher for a clunker trade-in, BMW's $4,500 "eco credit," and the $900 tax credit, buyers could save nearly $10,000 off the most fuel-efficient 3-Series model. The program runs until August 31.

J.D. Power and Associates Reports:Appeal of Newly Launched Models Improves Dramatically in 2009

--Volkswagen Receives Four Segment-Level Awards; Ford, Honda, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan Receive Two Each

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., July 16, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The automotive industry achieves a three-year high in appeal for new and redesigned models, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study(SM) released today. Seven of these models have received segment-level awards.
In 2009, the APEAL score for all-new and redesigned models averages 790 on a 1,000-point scale--11 points higher than in 2008 and 15 points higher than the 2009 score for carryover models. In addition, seven all-new and redesigned models rank highest in their respective segments, including the Dodge Challenger, Ford F-150 (in a tie), Ford Flex, Hyundai Genesis, Nissan Maxima, Volkswagen CC and Volkswagen Tiguan.
"Most automakers are on track in terms of designing new models that are highly appealing," said David Sargent, vice president of automotive research at J.D. Power and Associates. "The greater challenge for manufacturers lies in creating models that launch with both strong appeal and high quality, which ultimately lead to improved sales through greater customer loyalty and advocacy."
Throughout the years, vehicle models achieving high APEAL scores have been shown to benefit from faster sales, less need for cash incentives and higher profit margins on each vehicle sold.
The average APEAL score for all models in 2009 has improved considerably to 779 from 770 in 2008, driven primarily by increased owner satisfaction with fuel economy. This higher satisfaction comes from three main sources. First, fuel prices have decreased significantly during the past year, which has reduced owner concerns about gas mileage. Second, owners are switching to more fuel-efficient vehicles--in 2009, more than one-half of all vehicles included in the study are powered by four-cylinder engines, compared with just 39 percent in 2008. Third, automakers are designing models to be more fuel efficient than their predecessors.
"Although lower fuel prices and the switch to smaller vehicles have undoubtedly helped, there are also many individual vehicles that have made strong improvements in fuel economy ratings," said Sargent. "For example, the Ford F-150, Cadillac Escalade, Volkswagen Jetta and redesigned Dodge Ram have all made major strides in owner satisfaction with fuel economy through the introduction of more efficient powertrains."
In 2009, domestic brands comprise the four most-improved nameplates. Dodge posts the largest improvement, followed by Pontiac, Buick and Cadillac, respectively. In addition, the three most-improved models are from domestic manufacturers, including the Dodge Ram, Buick Lucerne and Ford F-150.
"Consumers have a great array of appealing vehicles to choose from by both domestic and import brands," said Sargent.
The overall gap in APEAL scores between domestic and import models has narrowed considerably during the past several years and is just five index points in 2009, compared with 15 points in 2008 and 27 points in 2007. Among premium models, import nameplates retain a slight edge, while among non-premium models, domestic brands have a similar edge.
APEAL Model-Level and Nameplate Rankings
Volkswagen captures four segment-level awards--more than any other vehicle nameplate in 2009--for the CC, GTI, Passat and Tiguan. Ford, Honda, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan each garner two awards. Ford receives model-level awards for the F-150 (in a tie) and Flex. Honda models receiving awards are the Odyssey (for a fifth consecutive year) and Ridgeline (for a fifth consecutive year). Mercedes-Benz earns awards for the S-Class (for a third consecutive year) and SLK-Class. The S-Class achieves the highest APEAL score of any model in the industry. Nissan receives awards for the Armada and Maxima.
Also receiving awards are the Chevrolet Avalanche (for a second consecutive year), in a tie; Dodge Challenger, Hyundai Genesis, MINI Cooper (for a second consecutive year); Porsche Cayenne (for a second consecutive year); and smart fortwo. The Ford F-150 and Honda Ridgeline are the only two models to rank highest in their respective segments in both the 2009 APEAL Study and 2009 Initial Quality Study (IQS) released in June.
Porsche is the highest-ranking nameplate in APEAL for a fifth consecutive year.
The APEAL Study examines how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive, based on owner evaluations of more than 90 vehicle attributes. The 2009 APEAL Study is based on responses gathered between February and May 2009 from more than 80,900 purchasers and lessees of new 2009 model-year cars and trucks who were surveyed after the first 90 days of ownership. The APEAL Study complements the recently released J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study(SM) (IQS), which focuses on problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days of ownership.

New 2011 Volkswagen Touareg Strives for Efficiency, Will Lose V-8

Volkswagen is preparing a new Touareg SUV for European launch next spring, with U.S. sales months later as a 2011 model. Targets for the new model are better economy -- both through significantly more efficient powertrains and lighter overall weight -- plus the incorporation of a third row of child seats.

The design will reflect VW's new Walter da Silva-mandated approach; emphasis on horizontal lines and a nose characterized by a wide grill between oblong lamps. It will retain SUV-like cues too. The hood and body sides have fewer, crisper feature lines and a greater simplicity of surfacing, which should suit a sport-utility well.

The Touareg has always had immense off-road capability, outfitted with a dual-range transfer case, locking differentials and huge wheel articulation. That stuff is heavy and expensive, and many customers never use it. So VW is taking a lesson from the sister Audi Q7 and ditching much of the hardcore hardware, and moving some of it to the options list.

2010 Kia Forte Koup - Coming Soon!!

After strapping ourselves behind the wheel of Kia's new Forte sedan for our initial drive, we came away thinking that the new Korean was a stylish, reasonable alternative to the scads of Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas populating America's roadways. Now it's time for Kia to follow the handsome sedan up with its first-ever two-door coupe Koup, which the automaker has now confirmed is slated to hit a dealership near you later this summer.Underneath the attractive (if derivative) sheetmetal will be seating for five thanks in part to the same 104.3-inch wheelbase that underpins the sedan. The Koup does sit lower than the four-door, though, and Kia says the ride and handling has been retuned for a sportier feel and features beefier L-shaped lower arms propping up the expected McPherson struts in front. Sixteen-inch alloy wheels and speed-sensitive power steering come standard and an uplevel SX trim stiffens things up even further.Powering the Koup is the same set of engine options as the sedan, meaning that the base and LX models get a 2.0-liter with 156 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque mated up with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, while the top-level SX gets a 2.4-liter mill with 173 horsepower and 168 lb-ft torque that can be ordered with either a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual. EPA fuel mileage estimates range from 25/34 with the base engine to 23/31 with the larger engine and automatic transmission. All Koup models include all the expected safety gear plus standard Bluetooth connectivity with steering wheel-mounted controls, a six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with Sirius, air conditioning, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, cruise control with steering wheel-mounted controls, a driver's seat height adjuster and tilt steering. Options include a sunroof and heated leather seats.

First Drive: 2010 Kia Soul

Clearly aimed at the young, the highline Infinity sound system is offered with a speaker lighting system. Integrated lights can pulsate to the beat, emulating a genuine club experience while en route to the club. While the lighting may be subject to individual taste, sound quality far exceeds the price point. Together with iPod connectivity and Bluetooth capabilities, the Soul is very attractive to the high-tech mobile entertainment crowd.
Utility is key for any self-respecting box, and with 14 storage zones the Soul ensures the perfect spot for every item you simply can't leave home without. This includes a large divided storage unit built into the raised rear floor. The rear storage compartment does invade on the main cargo volume, leaving 19.3 cubic feet, or 53.4 cubic feet with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats down.
Compare the Kia Soul, Scion xB and Nissan cube
On the RoadOn the hip urban streets of Miami, the Soul+ and Soul! feel right at home. The 2.0-liter engine shines around town with its flat torque curve and enough low-end grunt to make stop-and-go driving a breeze. Out on the highway, there is again little to complain about other than slightly above-average wind noise, common for the aerodynamically challenged box design. Gearing on the standard 5-speed manual takes full advantage of the power band for a sporty feel, despite a shifter that's slightly less vague than a car-industry CEO at a Senate hearing. The slightly sluggish 4-speed automatic could be the only glaring misstep in the face of the competition's better-suited 5-speed units.

Around town, the Soul is predictably taut, but not overly harsh. The ride can get busy at times over uneven city streets due to the torsion-beam rear suspension, a standard cost-cutting measure in the class. The Soul actually shows some promise on twisty back roads, which are not the typical habitat for anything referred to as a "box." Initial steering sensation is immediate, and — dare we say it — enjoyable. A bit more feedback midcorner, and the Kia might officially be fun to toss around. The meaty 225/45R18 performance tires on our Exclaim did not disappoint, offering above-average grip for hard corners and quick stops.
Mileage from this econobox is EPA-rated at a healthy 26 mpg city/31 mpg highway for the 1.6-liter base version, and 24/30 for our 2.0-liter testers, regardless of transmission choice.

Discuss: With loads of style and hip features, could the new Kia Soul dethrone the competition?
Right for You?The 2010 Kia Soul offers bang for the buck that's hard to beat with a base price of $13,300, and a fully loaded version tops out at less than 20 grand. With sights clearly set on the Scion xB, Kia has built a vehicle that is either on par with or a step ahead of the competition in nearly every category. It should be noted that Kia does not consider the Honda Fit direct competition. Whether you're a 23-year-old, a loft-dwelling DJ, or simply someone who appreciates fun, the 2010 Kia Soul is a feature-packed budget buy with an extra shot of style that definitely deserves a look.
