Rumormill: BMW's production Vision Concept to be called i8

We have heard that BMW has has registered a series of "i+number trademarks (i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8 and i9) to use for its fuel efficient MegaCity range of vehicles. BMWBlog is now saying that it has heard a rumor that the combination that will be applied to the upcoming (read: 2013 or 2014) version of the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept will be i8. This makes some sense, as a BMW i8 would conjure up images of the never-seen M8 supercar, but BMWBlog is unconvinced. After all, why bring back memories of gas-guzzling supercars when you're trying to reinvent what one can be? Plus, since the vehicle is so far away, there's probably no name set in stone yet anyway. Whatever BMW decides on, it'll be better than the name that the car was given when we first saw it at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009. Vision EfficientDynamics is just way, way too long.

Volkswagen offering lockable sat-nav system abroad

Volkswagen has come up with an unconventional solution for a rash of navigation thefts afflicting Dutch vehicle owners. From what we can gather, thieves are particularly fond of the company's RNS 310 and RNS 510 navigation systems, resulting in an apparent break-in epidemic. To help get the situation under control, VW is now offering its customers an RNS Navi Lock. The system locks a large metal plate over the entire navigation system, theoretically obscuring the hardware and making it more difficult to steal in the process. When owners are ready to use their nav screen, they simply unlock the plate using a key and go about their business. The system is available for the Golf, Passat and CC in Europe, but it's not exactly cheap. Buyers hoping to protect their precious navigation systems can expect to shell out around 219 euro for the armor plating. Pricey? Sure, but it's likely less than the cost of repairing break-in damage and replacing the whole system.

2012 BMW 6 Series Convertible drops its top (again) ahead of Detroit debut

With dozens of automakers churning out hundreds of different models on a continuous basis, the automotive industry has the potential for being downright chaotic. What saves it from such an eventuality is a measure of order: cars categorized into groups, segments, markets and bodystyles. That, and a certain measure of chronology. You see, when an automaker is about to introduce a new vehicle – whether production-ready or conceptual – they typically (though not necessarily) do so at a major auto show. But before they pull the tarp off the car on the show floor, they often release some photos and details to let us know what to expect. BMW, however, played by different rules when it came to the new 6 Series. The Bavarian automaker released images and info on its new convertible around the time of the Los Angeles Auto Show, but didn't unveil the car there. Instead, it'll be doing that at next month's Detroit Auto Show. There, we'll have our first chance to see the new model (along with the new X3, the revised 1 Series coupe and convertible and the new 1 Series M Coupe) up close and personal for the first time, after mulling over that first batch of shots and specs for the past month or so. And just to keep things hoppin', Munich has dropped a new batch of photos of the 2012 droptop, which we've placed in an embiggened gallery below for your viewing pleasure. Here in the States, the first of the new generation Sixers we'll see will be the 650i Convertible, with a turbocharged V8 giving 400 horsepower. Backed by either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed auto, the four-seat convertible figures to be a compelling performer.

Kia steams ahead with 100,000th Sorento

Kia is setting up the streamers and the champagne is on ice. The 100,000th Sorento crossover just went home with a new owner and it marks the first U.S.-built Kia vehicle to pass that milestone. For the past 11 months, the Sorento has been the brand's sales leader and it was only a matter of time before 100,000 of the crossovers took up residence in American driveways. The Kia Sorento is built at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, which is located in city of West Point. KMMG has an annual capacity of 300,000 units so perhaps the 100,000th sale is just the beginning of many more Sorento sales for the United States.

Spy Shots: Are you the 2012 Volkswagen NMS?

For all of secrecy surrounding the New Midsized Sedan, we may have just scored our first unfettered glimpse at the new Volkswagen four-door. The quick-eyed crew over at JokeForBlog managed to lay their hands on a scant few images of what appears to be the NMS, and the vehicle looks to take more than a few cues from the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. Using the German carmaker's revised corporate face up front and the same hexagonal license plate inset on the trunk deck, the similarities are almost overwhelming. We've got to wonder exactly what VW has planned to differentiate the two models other than size.

VW Jetta TDI tops Consumer Reports eco roundup, Honda CR-Z scores too low to recommend

Fuel efficiency is rapidly becoming one of the most influential determining factors when new car shoppers go looking for their next vehicle. And, as our friends at Consumer Reports correctly point out, earning top fuel efficiency marks generally means shopping in one of three categories: diesels, hybrids or subcompacts. As such, the consumer-oriented magazine has pitted four fuel-sippers against each other in their upcoming January, 2011 issue: the 2011 Ford Fiesta, Honda CR-Z, Mazda2 and Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI. Of these four models, the Jetta is the only one that's currently Recommended – the Fiesta and Mazda2 are too new to have adequate reliability data and, though expected to be reliable, the last-place CR-Z scored too low in CR's own road testing to recommend. CR tested two versions each of the Mazda and Ford subcompacts, one with a manual transmission and the other with an automatic. The Fiesta was ranked slightly higher than the Mazda2 overall, though the magazine seems to like both vehicles. Of the Honda, CR writes that "the ride is choppy, noise levels are high, and on-limit handling can be tricky." Couple those unfavorable traits with lower-than-expected fuel mileage of 35 mpg and limited utility, and it's understandable why CR wasn't particularly impressed with the CR-Z.Though somewhat pricey at $27,204, the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI performed admirably, delivering 36 mpg overall and a superb 49 mpg on the highway in the hands of CR's testers. As an aside, CR also took a look at the Fuel Doctor FD-47 fuel-saving device, and rather predictably, found that it basically did nothing at all.

Kia teases 2012 Picanto ahead of Geneva debut

Kia has been hard at work, gaining credibility and sales in seemingly all market sectors over the past couple of years. What was once derided as a cut-rate brand has come back with higher quality and attractive styling, but the Picanto has until now been largely left out of the fun. An update for the overseas subcompact came in 2007, but that didn't do much for the diminutive city car. What Kia has in store for the next-generation model, however, stands to improve its lot. With a debut scheduled for the Geneva Motor Show this coming March, Kia has released two sketches of what we might expect from the new Picanto. And if the new model carries over the edgy styling from these sketches with reasonable accuracy, the Picanto could emerge as a real player in the city car market.

Officially Official: Volkswagen Golf R headed to U.S. for 2012

It's been a couple of years since Volkswagen's heavyweight hot hatch, the R32, graced America's shores, but now we have official word of a successor. Tuned by the in-house R team at Volkswagen, the Golf R should be a good bit more exciting than its already entertaining forebear, and hopefully, it will shave a few pounds off, too. Unlike the R32, which was powered by VW's popular VR6, the new model will be powered by Volkswagen's ubiquitous turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. And while Volkswagen isn't quoting power output for the new U.S. model, the European version currently on sale conjures up 270 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. All of that gumption will be routed through VW's fourth generation Haldex 4Motion all-wheel drive system, which means the VW should once again be a good foil for cars like the Subaru WRX and Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart. Along with the power increase, VW is promising bigger brakes, an uprated suspension, 18-inch wheels, center-exit dual exhaust and a more liberally tuned ESP. Perhaps most interestingly, the Golf R will be available in both two and four doors and be paired exclusively with a manual transmission.

VW teams up with Fender for in-car audio systems

Four years ago Volkswagen came up with the V-Dub Rocks promotion, giving away a free guitar with nearly every new 2007 model. So it came with the slightest sense of deja vu when VW announced a partnership with Fender. This time, however, a guitar isn't part of the package, and instead, VW will be offering select 2012 models with an all-new Fender Premium Audio System, featuring nine speakers equipped with proprietary Panasonic tech, dual voice coil speakers and extended range tweeters. The first model to get the new system is the hotted-up 2012 Jetta GLI, followed by the all-new mid-size sedan and soon-to-be unveiled 2012 Beetle.

Officially Official: 2012 BMW 1 Series M Coupe is ready to cut and thrust

BMW's long, agonizing roll-out of information about the 2012 1 Series M Coupe has been a bit maddening. In addition to an early video reveal, we were invited to get some seat time in a prototype of the 1M, leaving us with just the final production-spec images and details in the world of the unknown. Well, wait no more – BMW has officially taken the wraps off of its hot new 1 Series, and while we're still very eager to put this sporty coupe through its paces, we can't help but wish for just a teensy bit more... oomph.Let's start with power. The 1 Series M Coupe uses BMW's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, and while early estimates had the car pumping out as much as 350 horsepower, the final numbers are: 335 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque – exactly what you get out of this engine in the current Z4 sDrive35is. The car's ECU has an overboost function that provides an additional 37 lb-ft of twist at full tilt, and with your foot pressed hard into the right pedal, 0-60 will happen in just 4.7 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited at – you guessed it – 155 miles per hour. The only transmission available is a six-speed manual, though rumors have circulated about a possible twin-clutch DCT box making its way into the car down the road. Like all M cars, the 1M features an M Drive button on the steering wheel that improves throttle response. Additionally, the car is equipped with an M Dynamic Mode button that allows the electronic driving nannies to kick in slightly later than normal.Compared to a 2011 135i coupe, the 1M is 0.2 inches longer, 2.1 inches wider and 0.5 inches taller. Both the front and rear tracks have been increased by 2.8 and 1.8 inches, respectively. Weighing in at 3,296 pounds, the 1 Series M Coupe is 77 pounds lighter than your off-the-shelf 135i. The 1M rides on standard M-specific 19-inch wheels wrapped in 245/35 rubber up front and beefy 265/35 out back. BMW hasn't made great strides to rework the 1 Series' interior for the M, but things like sport seats and a fat sport steering wheel are standard fare.Don't get us wrong, we're drooling over the 1 Series M Coupe, but we can't help but wish for a bit more power and perhaps a larger reduction in weight. After all, BMW is comparing this car to the E30 M3 coupe which is perhaps one of our all-time favorite Roundel sports cars. Still, BMW needs to position the 1 Series M Coupe in a way that it doesn't step on the toes of it's big brother, the M3, and we're sure that this M Coupe treatment will provide more than enough moxie for us enthusiasts to get our kicks. - autoblog

Report: VW design chief says new Microbus is in the cards

It's time to dust off the periodic dream of a new Volkswagen Microbus. The UK's Auto Express reports that Klaus Bischoff, chief designer for the Volkswagen brand, thinks a new version of the classic Camper is a fundamental part of his job. This rumor has come around before, and the New Beetle's ten-year run might help underscore the business case for a revival. There were plans to offer a production version of the 2001 Microbus concept that made a splash at that year's Detroit Motor Show, but cost considerations put an end to that project. A new Microbus is back on, according to Bischoff, and Volkswagen is trying to figure out how conventional or creative to go. VW's design offices across the globe are being asked for their input to develop a vehicle with wide influence, and platforms and powertrains are up in the air. If this rumor sticks, we're likely to see a concept in 2012. - Autoblog

KBB Best Resale Value awards announced, Subaru and BMW named best brands

Well, color us embarrassed. Never you mind the earlier post we ran about last year's Kelly Blue Book resale value awards. As it turns out, KBB very wisely hands out those nods for the upcoming model year based on their projected resale values five years from now. For 2011, Subaru walked away with the title of Best Resale Value Brand while BMW took the nod for Best Resale Value Luxury Brand. The two dethroned Toyota and Lexus, respectively, despite the Japanese automaker's products holding four slots on the top 10 list.

2011 Kia Optima officially priced from $18,995

The 2011 Kia Optima appears to be a quantum leap improvement over the 2010 model, with improved aesthetics, powertrains and technology. But do all those improvements come at a cost? According to Kia, the 2011 Optima will start at $18,995. That's $1,000 more than the outgoing model, but still $1,000 or so lower than many competitors' midsize offerings, and lower still than its cross-Korean cousin, the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. With the base model comes standard power window and door locks, Sirius Satellite radio and a USB interface for your iPod.Move up to the LX trim level with a six-speed automatic transmission and the starting price is $20,495. The LX comes standard with alloy wheels, cruise control and an eco mode for more efficient driving. The EX is the next step up the luxury ladder with leather seating surfaces, an eight-way power driver's seat, dual zone climate control, 17-inch wheels and push-button start. If horsepower is your thing, the EX Turbo supplies 274 horsepower, a revised front grille and special interior accents for a reasonable $24,495, which in this case actually costs a little more than the Sonata Turbo at $24,145. The top-end Optima, the SX, starts at $25,995. Standard features for the SX include a host of interior upgrades, 18-inch wheels, revised lower trim, a sport-tuned suspension, HID headlamps and LEDs out back

LA 2010: Subaru Impreza Concept caught in living color

One of the biggest surprises (so far...) of the 2010 LA Auto Show has to be the Subaru Impreza Design Concept that snuck up on us just a few hours ago. Some thought it might be the long-awaited Subota coupe (a close cousin of the Toyobaru, of course), but in reality what we have here is a conceptual sedan that the Japanese automaker claims will heavily influence future models... namely the Impreza, we'd wager.Yes, there's a working 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine bolted to a CVT gearbox behind that shapely new front grille and its massive side vents, but it's the styling we're really intrigued by.

Rumormill: BMW reconsidering larger SUV for U.S. market?

Judging from the whispers making their way around the interwebs, BMW may be interested in rekindling the X7 flame. The company was one of many corporations that took part in a global summit in Seoul to discuss how to rebalance global trade away from a U.S.-dependent market. But while many of the participants are keen to shift their attentions toward economies in China and Germany, BMW seemed to think that the U.S. would be back on its feet and buying sooner rather than later. The automaker even went so far as to say that it hadn't completely nixed the idea of introducing another larger SUV to its North American lineup. That means that the X7, a massive vehicle killed off in 2008, may not be completely off of the table. Throwing another SUV into the company's portfolio wouldn't seem to be in keeping with BMW's new commitment to building ever more efficient vehicles, though you never know. Just because we like to think that we live in a post-SUV world doesn't mean American buyers don't love their massive machines.

BMW releases limited Z4 Silver Top edition for Japan

BMW has a strong following in the Land of the Rising Sun, and has been gracing it with a number of special editions over the past several years. We recently reported on the 120i Performance Unlimited edition, and now BMW Japan has followed up with the new Silver Top edition of the Z4 roadster. As you might have guessed the Silver Top is distinguished by its silver top. The contrast with the black body color gives it a rather Zagato-like profile, and the mirror housings get the same treatment. In case the look wasn't complete enough, the interior has been decked out in red leather as well. It's based on the sDrive23i trim level, pairing the 2.5-liter six with the six-speed automatic transmission. Only 15 examples will be offered exclusively in Japan with a 5.590 million yen sticker price – about $69k by today's conversion rates – with deliveries slated to arrive in April 2011.

Rendered Speculation: 2012 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet

It looks like we finally have a rendering to go with the rampant speculation about the introduction of a Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet. The ever-talented Jon Sibal has turned his attention to the drop-head Vee-Dub, and has worked up what he thinks the car might look like should the the people's automaker decide to pull the trigger on the project, which will reportedly commence in the spring of 2011. Martin Winterkorn, chairman of the board for VW, has already said that he would like to see a convertible version of the sixth-generation Golf, and as we all know, anything that Winterkorn wants, he typically gets.Sibal's rendering certainly makes for a snappy dresser, though we're guessing that the production version will use a slightly beefier roll bar system. Of course, it's entirely possible that the topless Golf could do away with a center roll section altogether in favor of something similar to the sturdy hoops found in the Mini Cooper Convertible.

Volkswagen testing ice- and fog-free windshield technology

Volkswagen is out to give us all a little taste of better living through chemistry. The company has partnered up with the minds at the Fraunhofer Institute to develop a windshield that's resistant to fog, frost and ice. The scientists managed to apply a thin layer of indium tin oxide to the outer layer of the glass, and they say that the compound does a good job of keeping frost from forming all the way down to zero degrees Fahrenheit. Pretty impressive.Volkswagen marketing gurus have taken to calling the coating "Low-E" for low thermal emissivity. How does it work? Details are scarce at the moment, but the manufacturer is saying the compound helps to keep heat from radiating skyward, essentially keeping the glass just a bit warmer than the ambient temperature. While the Low-E tech won't guarantee against fogging or frosting, it does greatly reduce its likelihood. So how long will it be before the windshield in your new Jetta is immune to Old Man Winter's shenanigans? No one is saying for sure. VW is still ironing out a few kinks at the moment, including the fact that the indium tin oxide wreaks havoc on both radio and cell phone signals.

Report: Volkswagen planning hotter Jetta R

According to a report from Autocar, Volkswagen will be offering a performance-oriented R version of its sixth-generation Jetta. The automaker has already launched its Golf R and Scirocco R overseas, and VW has long said that it plans to expand its performance offerings around the world.Volkswagen reportedly showed European media a version of the Jetta equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 during the car's official launch last week. No power numbers were divulged, but Autocar states that a six-speed dual-clutch transmission was fitted to this Jetta, as was 4Motion all-wheel drive.Ulrich Hackenberg, VW's head of research and development, says that the Jetta R is being heavily considered and that if customer demand is there, it will be produced (sounds familiar, doesn't it?). If the Jetta R does see the light of day, we're willing to bet that it will come to North American soil, especially since the United States is the new Jetta's key market.

2011 Subaru Forester gets web debut

Subaru has released official details on what we will be seeing in the 2011 Forester. The company had previously announced that the new 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine will find its way under the CUV's hood, as will the same turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder found in the current XT. Speaking of the XT, Subaru will now offer the range-topping Forester in XT Premium and XT Touring guises, with Touring trim replacing Limited as the top of the line. That brings along goodies like self-adjusting HID headlights, dual-zone climate control and a backup camera.Meanwhile, Subaru has packed in a few more goodies on nearly every trim level. Bluetooth hands-free calling and a one-touch up/down driver's window comes standard on every Forester with the exception of the very base model. In addition, it looks like both the 2.5X Premium and 2.5XT Premium will boast a new audio system complete with six speakers, USB and AUX inputs, as well as iPod and Satellite radio capability.

Rumormill: BMW to replace M3 sedan with M3 Gran Turismo?!

Allow us to start by saying that we love high-performance hatchbacks and wagons as much as the next auto-obsessed goon. Heck, we still go all gooey-kneed when we lay eyes on a Lexus IS300 SportCross, but the rumors dusting up over the next-generation M3 have us a little uneasy. According to Inside Line and M3Post, BMW may be looking to replace the slow-selling M3 sedan with a new GT body style. That means that designers are looking to spread the funky lines of the 5-Series Gran Turismo to other models in the company's stable, including as a replacement for the disappointingly slow-selling M3 sedan. With that high-revving V8 likely on its way out the door in favor of a turbocharged I6 and the threat of the 5-Series GT's design spreading to the company's holiest of holy high performance models, we've got to wonder exactly where there decision makers at BMW have their heads lodged. We've got our guesses.

Volkswagen opens floodgates on 2011 Passat

Fresh after the 2011 Volkswagen Passat unveil at this year's Paris Motor Show, VW has unleashed a deluge of information and photos of the new sedan and its wagon counterpart. As with most manufacturers, Volkswagen seems bent on giving buyers all the tech they can stand. The 2011 Passat will ship with goodies like a fatigue detection system, the VW equivalent of the Volvo City Safety system and adaptive cruise control, among other tricks. Volkswagen says that it has also made the new Passat as quiet as can be thanks to in the dash and doors to keep exterior noise at bay.The 2011 Passat will launch with a variety of engines depending on the market, including three diesel mills and four gasoline plants. The company also says that two DSG gearboxes will ship along with those mills in both six- and a seven-speed configurations. For those that prefer to row your own cogs, a six-speed manual will also be available. We mustn't forget, however, that the United States will not be getting this version of the Passat. Instead, Volkswagen has an all-new sedan (tentatively called "NMS" or "new mid-size sedan") slated for U.S. consumption in the not-too-distant future. The 2011 Passat you see here is scheduled to go on sale in Germany at the beginning of November. The rest of Europe will have to wait a few more months after that.

First Drive: 2011 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid

Fuel economy is a funny thing. In Europe, better efficiency has always boiled down to two simple concepts: diesel fuel and turbos. But like the 35-year-old who won't drink tequila because of a bad experience in college, American buyers' stomachs start turning whenever manufacturers talk about oil-burners – clean or otherwise. That's a problem for carmakers like Volkswagen. You see, the company can build an arsenal of clean diesel vehicles that have no problem turning out excellent fuel-economy numbers without the weight, complexity or burden of lugging around a partially electric drivetrain, but that doesn't mean Americans will buy them. Nope. On this side of the pond, fuel efficiency translates into just one word: hybrid. And that's exactly why Volkswagen has taken to electrifying its beefy 2011 Touareg, the very first production hybrid in the company's history. Volkswagen has made no secret of the fact that it plans to be the world's number one automaker, and that part of its plan for global domination involves broadening its appeal in the still-juicy American market. If you were wondering exactly what that meant for the company's lineup on our side of the world, wonder no more. We're living in the future, and it's a place stocked with a blazingly-quick, fully capable and quasi-efficient SUV from Germany with love.

Subaru Forester S-Edition concept points towards sporty new model for 2011

The Sydney Motor Show doesn't grab the full attention of the global media like Paris or Geneva, though this latest bit of news from Subaru certainly piques our interest. We had heard rumblings of a more potent Subaru crossover before, and now this, the Forester S-Edition concept, previews what the automaker says is "an exciting development in our Forester range" set to debut early next year.Subaru has boosted the Forester XT's turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four up to 259 horsepower and 256 pound-feet of torque, gains of 32 and 20, respectively over the normal Australian model. That power runs through a five-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters (a proper stick-shift would be preferred, Subaru), and a new variable torque distributing all-wheel-drive system keeps things in check on the road. Other enhancements include a revised sport suspension, 17-inch STI wheels, Alcantara seat trim and S-Edition badging throughout.

Volkswagen Eos updated with GTI engine, crisper looks

The trouble with hard-top convertibles – four-seat cabrios especially – is the added weight penalty. German automakers in particular have proven adept at counteracting the dynamic drawbacks that open-air flexibility brings, but sooner or later you're just going to need more power. And that's exactly what Volkswagen is doing with the Eos.Often derided as a "hairdresser's car", the 2012 Eos has been treated to one of our favorite engines: the 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder from the Golf GTI. This 208-horspower engine – available with either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch transmission – can now take the Eos from a full stop to highway pace in 7.8 seconds. Overseas buyers can also specify the 138-hp 2.0-liter diesel (with the same transmission choices). Volkswagen has also included Hill Start Assist standard on the 2012 Eos, along with Vienna leather upholstery, heated seats, 17-inch wheels and some sheetmetal enhancements that brings its look in line with the rest of the brand's small car lineup.

VW sets single-tank distance record with 1,527-mile Passat BlueMotion

What's the most you've ever gotten out of a single tank of gas? 400 miles? Maybe 600 miles if you're under diesel power? Volkswagen wanted to put its Passat BlueMotion to the test and see just how many miles it can cover on one tank. A team from the UK's Sunday Times set off from Kent, England with a full tank of diesel – then drove to the south of France and back. Averaging just over 45 miles per hour, the team watched as 1,527 miles came and went. The 1.6-liter TDI equipped VW Passat BlueMotion used was a standard production model which features a lower standard ride height, Stop/Start tech, longer gearing and low rolling resistance tires. As two witnesses drove behind them to verify the attempt for the Guinness Book of World Records, the Passat rolled along to the tune of nearly 90 miles per gallon – much higher than the 64.2 mpg rating the vehicle carries.

Spy Shots: First photos of 2012 Volkswagen New Beetle

Earlier this year we learned that Volkswagen has been readying a new New Beetle, and we now have the first spy photos of the next-generation Bug out testing. Rumor has it that this car could debut as early as next month at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show, but we think a Detroit or Geneva debut is much more likely.Though still in test mule stages, it's obvious that the next Beetle will take a lot of its styling cues from Volkswagen's Ragster concept, first shown in 2005. The longer, flatter greenhouse and softened curves give the cutesy Bug a more aggressive stance. Perhaps Volkswagen is trying to break the Beetle out of its "chick car" stereotype. The 2012 Beetle will ride on the new Golf VI platform, and it's expected that powertrains will be shared between both cars. Volkswagen's 2.5-liter inline-five is a safe bet, as is the 2.0-liter TDI four, but sources within Volkswagen have told us that the next-generation Beetle will be available with a pretty potent engine. "Something you can take to the track," they said. Hmm... Whatever the case, we'll know more when the car makes its official debut within the next few months.

Rumormill: Kia considering Mazda MX-5 Miata competitor?

It looks like Kia may be jumping into the sports car fray sometime soon. According to Drive, the Korean automaker has its sights set on building a model to lock horns with the poster child for cheap driving fun, the Mazda MX-5 Miata. The head honcho of Kia design, Peter Schreyer, has said that he's behind the idea of his company building a low-budget, rear-wheel-drive drop top. When Drive asked the designer how work was coming along on the Kia sports car, Schreyer was plenty evasive, and the site is taking that to mean that there's a passel of workers chiseling away on a new fun-to-fling model right now.Schreyer is widely known as a fan of the Miata, and has been quoted pontificating on the benefits that Mazda has reaped from that particular car. With Hyundai already enjoying some success with its sports-oriented Genesis Coupe, it's possible that the suits at Kia could find a case for a smaller, more playful sports car in that company's stable. Hey, we can hope.

Paris 2010: BMW X3 is new yet familiar

BMW has whisked the sheets off its 2011 X3, and the second-generation crossover looks suspiciously like its predecessor. Beyond a seemingly endless parade of spy shots over the last couple of years, that's predictable, as the X3 has been a considerable sales success for the German automaker. While the sheetmetal stays largely the same, the lineup receives new engines and an eight-speed automatic gearbox that's set to spread like kudzu throughout the automaker's offerings. The X3 also becomes the first model in BMW's growing X franchise to adopt electric power steering (the automaker's controversial variable sports steering rack is optional), as well as optional Damper Control and Dynamic Drive Control (as seen on its range of sedans and sports cars). In addition to the new sheetmetal, BMW promises added rear seat room, addressing one of the vehicle's key shortcomings for the North American market.Power will come from BMW's Twinpower Turbo (Bimmerese for twin-scroll turbo) inline six-cylinder engine that gives the XDrive35i model 306 brake horsepower at 5,800 rpm with max torque of 295 pound-feet of torque at just 1,300 rpm. That's good enough for a 0-62 mph time of just 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 152 mph, though it's not clear if that figure will be governed when it reaches us Yanks. An entry-level xDrive28i model will also receive I-6 power, with 240 hp and 230 pound-feet of torque. Naturally, diesel mills will also be available in other areas of the globe, but as of yet, BMW officials haven't committed to bringing an oil burner to the States. The gas model, however, should be in showrooms before year's end, and for U.S. buyers, it'll have a shorter distance to travel, as it will be built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. - autoblog

Report: Volkswagen joining NASCAR rumors begin to swirl again

First Toyota, now Volkswagen? According to the boys from Motor Trend, VeeDub is seriously considering entering into the bastion of American motorsport. That's right, NASCAR. While rumors of VW fielding a Formula 1 team have swirled for quite some time, this is the second time we've heard that the German automaker is considering American stock cars and oval tracks. What may be prompting this apparent interest in NASCAR? As we all know, Volkswagen has its sights set on becoming a much larger player in the American market, going so far as to create a New Midsize Sedan specifically for the States that will be built by U.S. workers in Tennessee. Not exactly Carolina, the hub of NASCAR development, but close enough. And it's this upcoming New Midsize Sedan (unnamed as of yet) that would be doing oval duty against the likes of Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and the previously mentioned Toyota. If the rumors are to be believed, VW will begin talks with NASCAR officials and Roger Penske, who fields one of the more successful teams in the sport, in November after the current season concludes. autoblog

Bluetooth connectivity is getting better all the time. No longer content with just connect your phone, new systems also allow you to wirelessly stream music to your car's speakers. Volkswagen is working on a system which takes the idea of pairing a phone to your car, and brings it to a whole new level. The system, called Terminal Mode, allows VW's touchscreen display to become an extension of the your smartphone – weather, GPS, music, phone and text messaging are right at your fingertips in a highly visible location.Currently, the system is still under development and promises to get better as Volkswagen upgrades its infotainment screens. The current units use resistive touchscreens which can be slightly slower to respond compared with the capacitive units, which will make their way into VWs in the near future. - autoblog

Subaru debuts third-generation boxer four-cylinder engine

Boxer lovers, the next chapter in your love affair has just begun. Fuji Heavy Industries, parent company of Subaru, has introduced the latest, third-generation boxer engine that will relieve the second-gen after 21 years of service. This is a brand new lump, not a rework, and FHI has built a factory just to produce it.The bore and stroke have been increased, and it will be available with four cylinders in 2.0- and 2.5-liter displacements. The intake ports have been redesigned, lighter pistons and connecting rods offer reduced internal friction, and separate cooling circuitry for the block and the head are some of the changes that have resulted in a lower emissions and a ten percent increase in fuel efficiency. No power figures are being quoted yet, so we'll have to see how it measures up when it finds its way into production engine bays. This new boxer will be Subaru's primary engine, and will first be seen in the Forester. - Autoblog

BMW the latest automaker to showcase Bang & Olufsen sound system

Any of a number of automakers would kill to claim the moniker of "rising star" in the automotive industry, but the latest doesn't even make cars. They make sound systems. Some of the best in the business, as some audiophiles suggest. But their fitment in a growing array of new cars has put them on the fast track to dominating the interiors of an expanding range of luxury automobiles. We're talking, of course, about Bang & Olufsen. In addition to their sumptuous home and personal sound systems, B&O has been fitting its wares to the likes of Aston Martin, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. And now they've teamed up with BMW.The system, as some particularly astute car fanatics may have noticed, is fitted to the Munich's latest show car, the BMW 6 Series Coupe Concept, slated to debut next week at the Paris Motor Show. The concept packs no fewer than sixteen BeoLab 5 speakers, including a pair of sub-woofers (one under each seat), seven mid-range speakers and seven tweeters, as well as Bang's proprietary Acoustic Lens Technology. And though they're being rolled out on a show car first, we don't expect it'll be too long before they'll find their way onto road-going automobiles available from your local Bimmer dealer. - Autoblog

BMW introducing iPad docks for back seats, iPhone 4 integration

Good news, Apple fans. BMW has turned up the level of smart phone integration in its vehicles in a big way. The company will be showing off its new ConnectedDrive system at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The swank tech not only boasts Bluetooth wizardry and a text-to-speech function that will allow drivers to access text messages, memos, emails and the like from their Blackberry, it will also work with Apple iOS4. That means that the system clicks with the latest iPhone. But wait, there's more. The German manufacturer is also introducing something it calls iPod Out that's designed to make the most of using Apple music players in the vehicle. There's even a handy docking system for the iPad in the back seats. What's more, BMW will offer a mobile hotspot system with ConnectedDrive so that passengers can surf the web without burning up their data plans. Welcome to the brave new world. Thanks for the tip, Chris! - Autoblog

Paris Preview: BMW unwraps 6 Series Coupe Concept

Like so many "concepts" from BMW, the 6 Series Coupe bound for the Paris Motor Show is a concept in name alone. What you're looking at is BMW's next GT, and even a cursory glance proves that the Bangleization of BMW is officially over.Set to be based on the 5 Series' underpinnings and taking several cues from the Grand Coupe concept shown in Beijing, the next BMW 6 Series takes the brand's new upright grille, frames it with a set of full-LED headlamps and than caps things off with a more contoured rump. We're not going to pass judgement on the design until we see it in person, but like the last 6er, this new GT appears to be a love it or loathe it affair. On the contrary, the interior is an airy, organic environment, complete with an asymmetrical center console tilted towards the driver, a new navigation display and a host of aluminum and leather accents that are several steps beyond what's currently on offer from BMW. We're particularly digging the redesigned steering wheel and the waterfall of material that connects the dash to the transmission tunnel.BMW isn't giving up specifics on dimensions or engines – this is a "concept" after all – but expect the 2012 BMW 6 Series to be slightly lower and marginally wider than the current model. Power will be supplied by BMW's current array of naturally aspirated and turbocharged inline sixes, with the next M6 outputting over 550 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. The standard 6 should be in showroom early next year, with the M6 to arriving in late 2012 and the soft-top due out in late 2011. - Autoblog

Spy Shots: Subaru testing its version of FT-86 "Toyobaru" coupe in the Death Valley heat

We've read many reports lately having to do with Toyota's FT-86 rear-wheel drive sports coupe, but we mustn't forget that Subaru will be getting its own version of this new two-door – it is a joint venture, after all. Our spies have captured this obviously Subaru-bodied mule out testing in Death Valley, showing that things are still on track for the "Toyobaru" to come to market in the near future.Details are still very slim on what Subaru's version of the FT-86 will offer, and contrary to the brand's image, the new coupe may not be available with all-wheel drive. If that's the case, Subaru will have to offer a lot more in the way of styling (and perhaps power) to differentiate it from its Toyota sister. This latest prototype has sprouted a hood scoop not seen on earlier test cars, suggesting that a top-mount intercooler could be underhood, though it's also possible that this is just the result of some WRX/STI parts being used for camouflage purposes.Toyota is expected to launch its version of the FT-86 in November of 2011, so keep your fingers crossed for Subaru's version to drop around the same time. - Autoblog

Rumormill: Volkswagen Touareg R Hybrid under consideration

The words "performance" and "hybrid" are typically only bandied about in the same sentence by marketing types. Here in the real world, lugging around an extra few hundred pounds of batteries is no way to sharpen a vehicle's dynamics, but if the rumors kicking around the interwebs are to be believed, that's exactly what Volkswagen has planned with a new R version of the Touareg. Auto Evolution reports that engineers are hard at work on a new version of the CUV that will pack a punch from both a gasoline V8 and a powerful electric motor. As you might imagine, specs for such a monstrosity aren't exactly solid, but the Italian rag says VW is shooting for 500 horsepower from the V8 and 47 horsepower from an electric motor. Sure, that means the high-rider will pack a grand total of 547 ponies, but we're more interested in the mountain-moving levels of torque available from such a combination. Sounds like a fine way to embarrass a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, if nothing else

Kia Unveils Super Bowl Ad With Popular Life-Size Children's Characters Taking Cross-Country Joyride

The launch of the all-new 2011 Sorento

- the largest campaign in company history for Kia Motors America (KMA) - continues today with the reveal of Kia's first-ever Super Bowl ad on www.kiasorento.com. Titled "Joyride Dream," the 60-second spot follows a colorful cast of life-size children's characters - including Muno (from YO GABBA GABBA!, the award-winning series and live tour, produced by W!LDBRAIN and The Magic Store), Sock Monkey (Fox River Mills, Inc.), MR. X (BLABLA KIDS collection), Robot and Teddy Bear - who take the all-new Sorento CUV for a spin through a series of dream-like adventures and encounter exploding bowling pins, jumping jet skis, snow angels and a mechanical bull along the way.
"The Kia brand is becoming increasingly relevant in the U.S., and the arrival of the first vehicle from the new Kia plant in West Point, Georgia is the perfect time for the brand to use the Super Bowl advertising stage to introduce the all-new 2011 Sorento to more than 100 million people watching the game," said Michael Sprague, vice president of marketing, KMA.
Scheduled to air during the third quarter of the big game, the soundtrack for the characters' epic adventure is "How Do You Like Me Now" by indie rock band The Heavy.
Created by David&Goliath, "Joyride Dream" speaks to young couples who are entering a new life stage and facing adult responsibilities while still desiring the style, freedom and fun they've always enjoyed.
"New parents often find their vehicles' back seats cluttered with toys and child TV show characters, so assembling the cast of 'Joyride Dream' provided a clever way to showcase Sorento's unique combination of just-right size, style and amenities that enables young couples to enjoy their new lifestyle to the fullest," said Sprague. "From Muno's eye-catching design and Sock Monkey's agility to the fun of Mr. X, the advanced technology of Robot and the safety and security of Teddy Bear, each character's inherent trait helps us tell the Sorento story."
The first vehicle to roll off the line at Kia's new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia, the all-new 2011 Sorento encompasses both the brand's signature design cues as well as its distinct combination of value, safety and style. The 2011 Sorento, which went on-sale in early-January, offers consumers a well-equipped, well-appointed CUV with best-in-class power(2) suited perfectly for the fun, dynamic and discerning driver.
In addition to the Super Bowl spot, Sorento is currently featured on KMA's first Times Square billboard and is the "Official Vehicle of the NBA" for the current basketball season. The 2011 Sorento was named the Official Vehicle of the 2009 Chick-fil-A Bowl and Outback Bowl college football games.

AutoWeek's 'Best Concept' Editors' Choice Award

Volkswagen's New Compact Coupe Hybrid Wins AutoWeek's 'Best Concept' Editors' Choice Award at 2010 North American International Auto Show

DETROIT, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Volkswagen of America, Inc. is proud to announce that their latest concept, the New Compact Coupe (NCC) Hybrid, has been named the "Best Concept" by AutoWeek at the 2010 North American International Auto Show. Every year, editors from AutoWeek search the halls of the world's biggest auto shows, and pick their favorite vehicles on display. The NCC, with its advanced TSI gasoline-electric full hybrid system, fresh styling, and a Grand Touring-style interior, is Volkswagen's latest alternative fuel powertrain concept with an eye to the future. Along with the winning vehicles in three other categories from the show, the NCC was announced as winner of the "Best Concept" Editor's Choice award this morning, at the 2010 AutoWeek Design Forum held in Detroit.

"There are many worthy concepts at the 2010 NAIAS," said Wes Raynal, editor of AutoWeek and AutoWeek.com. "In the end, the Volkswagen New Compact Coupe takes the top concept award. We were struck with how finished the car looks considering it is a concept - it looks very close to being production-ready. That it is also a hybrid is a bonus."
"It is a tremendous honor to have the NCC declared as the best concept among the dozens of other inspiring designs being shown here at the 2010 NAIAS," said Stefan Jacoby, President, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "The NCC stands as Volkswagen's most realistic vision for how full hybrid vehicles will be able to satisfy the everyday needs and desires of today's drivers. Volkswagen showed how you can have fuel efficiency, excellent design, and a dynamic driving experience all in one vehicle."
The New Compact Coupe is powered by a combination of Volkswagen's 1.4L TSI turbocharged and intercooled gasoline engine, making 150 horsepower and a usable 177 lbs.-ft. of torque, and an electric drive motor with 27 hp. Both units can work together, with the electric motor providing an added boost of power, or the NCC can run in full electric mode. All told, the NCC is capable of achieving a combined fuel economy rating of 45 mpg. A seven-speed Direct Shift Gearbox® (DSG®) transmission keeps power on tap while aiding efficiency, and the electric motor can help to recharge the lithium-ion battery pack during braking.
Outside, the NCC features an aggressive front end with all-new Bi-Xenon headlights, LED running lights, and large, inset cooling ducts. An elegant profile is developed through emphasized curves, a high tornado line, and large 19-inch wheels. The fastback roofline flows into a integrated rear spoiler, while a lowered stance, wider track, and "Tungsten Silver Metallic" paint finish the dynamic looks.
Plush sport seating covered in light leather awaits all four occupants, accented by darker, "Grigio Quartz" elements. A leather-wrapped sport steering wheel with multifunction controls stands next to the 8-inch touchscreen entertainment system. The rear passengers have access to the center console that extends through the cabin with built-in climate controls, armrest, and hidden storage.
To learn more about the Volkswagen New Compact Coupe Hybrid and more, please stop by the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, or visit http://www.vw.com/ and media.vw.com.

Kia and Microsoft set to debut UVO at CES, leave us wondering for now

When you think Microsoft car technology you think SYNC, right? Perfectly natural, since it's the only place Redmond's bits and bytes have made much of an impact on the automotive scene. But SYNC is just Ford's flavor of Microsoft's Windows Embedded Technologies -- naturally with plenty of customizations and functionality on top. It's not an exclusive partnership and we've known for some time now that Hyundai and Kia were next in line to get some love from Washington. Kia's time has come, with the company set to launch UVO at CES next week. The only question now is: What exactly is it?
We spoke with representatives from Microsoft and Kia on Wednesday, where they unveiled the UVO name, explained as being short for "your voice." Because of that we expect there will be a strong focus on speech recognition in this system, but beyond that it's anyone's guess what the latest automotive infotainment system will be packing -- those same representatives were tight-lipped about the details. Naturally we expect it'll be generally similar to Ford's SYNC, but Kia is a very different sort of company than the one Henry built, so surely a much fresher look and feel is in store at the very least.
