Auto Review: 2009 Kia Borrego

By CHRIS REED, UPP Contributor—
The all-new Kia Borrego midsize SUV is worthy of serious consideration for those seeking a capable family hauler. Introduced for 2009, the Borrego came as a surprise to the automotive market. Kia is known to offer a high-value line of cars, vans, and small SUVs. Few foresaw a larger, truck-like, midsize SUV coming from the Korean automaker.
In a nutshell the Borrego offers size, safety, style, seating for seven, and truck-like capability. Some may yawn at the idea of another midsize SUV, but take note; the Borrego’s body-on-frame platform makes it unique to much of its competition.
The Borrego differs from crossover SUVs, such as the Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander, in several ways. Crossover SUVs only offer four and six-cylinder motors, but the Borrego offers a V8 for those who desire the additional power. Crossover SUVs are primarily front-wheel-drive with power optionally routed to the rear for all-wheel-drive. The Borrego is primarily rear-wheel-drive, with power routed to the front wheels in the traditional four-wheel-drive setup. This configuration tends to be sturdier when doing truck-ish stuff like serious off-roading or towing. That’s why the Borrego comes standard with underbody skid plates.
Doug Smith Kia in American Fork was kind enough to provide a silver Borrego EX V6 4WD for the purpose of evaluation.
Seating
The front buckets are comfortable with a wide range of movement. The second row is particularly comfortable because it’s wide, it adjusts forward and backward, and the seat backs recline. The second row folds almost flat if desired. Buckled into the second row with the seat back reclined and warm air blowing on me through the vents in the center console, I felt I could take a long trip quite comfortably. My five-foot-seven frame also fit nicely in the third row, although the seat cushions back there are low to the floor – more comfortable for younger passengers with shorter legs. Third row access is easy enough with the common fold-and-slide-forward second row configuration. The third row folds flat into the floor. There are two cup holders for each row of seats – front, middle, and back.
Cargo
Cargo space behind the third row of seats is limited – as is the case with all midsize SUVs that offer third-row seating. However, if only one rear seat is in use, the other can be folded flat for additional volume. Roof rails are standard.
The Borrego is capable of serious towing – 5000 lbs with the V6 and 7500 lbs with the V8. Don’t worry about paying extra for the tow package, it comes standard.
Comfort
In true Kia fashion, the Borrego comes standard with a host of amenities including but not limited to: air conditioning, power windows and locks, cruise control, tinted windows, power-adjustable mirrors, and an AM/FM/CD/MP3/SIRIUS audio system with USB/auxiliary input jacks. The base stereo provided satisfying sound at low and high volume.
A few nice touches by Kia make even the least-expensive Borrego look good, such as standard 17” alloy wheels, body color mirrors and exterior door handles, chrome front grill, and the two tone color scheme.
Safety
As with most new vehicles, the Borrego is loaded with airbags and safety technology that earns it top safety ratings for frontal and side impacts.
Powertrain
The Borrego offers competitive V6 and V8 engine/transmission combinations. The standard 3.8-liter V6 is good for 276 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque, and it is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the crossover SUV competition, the Borrego offers an impressive 4.6-liter V8 mated to a six-speed transmission. The 4.6-liter is good for 337 hp and 323 lb.-ft of torque.
Interestingly, fuel economy is not a compelling reason to pick one motor over the other because their EPA ratings are within one mile per gallon of each other. The V6 4WD Borrego is rated for 16 mpg city/21 mph highway.
Driving Impressions:
Driving the four-wheel-drive Borrego EX with the V6 was a pleasant experience. This engine/transmission combination is powerful and smooth. The transmission always seemed to know the right gear to be in. The manual shift feature was also fun to use, and provided quick responses. It also turned a surprisingly tight circle for its size.
I was honestly surprised by the 3.8-liter V6. It felt and sounded like a V8 to the point that I questioned the salesman if he was positive that this particular Borrego was not equipped with the V8 – I had not personally popped the hood to check. This motor provides plenty of power for practical purposes. Chad Walkenhorst, a sales consultant at Doug Smith Kia, said that sales of the V8 Borregos have been slower than those of the V6 version. This very well may have to do with how capable and likeable the V6 is in view of the price disparity between the two motors.
I was impressed by the ride quality, and the total absence of squeaks and rattles. Cruising at 60 mph, 70 mph, and 80 mph was effortless and comfortable, although a little wind noise from the A-pillars became apparent at higher speeds.
The car-like interior is attractive, and soft-touch materials abound. It both looks and feels high quality.
Final Evaluation
If you are in the market for a comfortable, capable midsize SUV as your people hauler, the Borrego is certainly worth consideration. Although crossover SUVs might offer slightly better on-road driving dynamics, the Borrego offers confident off-road and towing capability. What do you value the most? Don’t forget the incentives that are often available from Kia, as well as the standard 10-year/100,000-mile warranty on all Kia vehicles.
Note from the Author
I don’t work for Kia, but as a journalist and automotive enthusiast I feel responsible to express the following:
Autonews.com reported that Kia spent more money on the introduction of the Borrego than any other automotive introduction they’ve ever done. Kia is still striving to emerge from their past – a reputation for producing vehicles that were cheap in both price and quality. For example, I recently told my friend Tommy about the Kia Borrego. Tommy loves the Honda Pilot, and as soon as I said the word “Kia” he acted genuinely disgusted. How dare I even mention the Borrego and the Pilot in the same sentence? Tommy then proceeded to remind me that will never drive a Kia because they are “ugly, cheap little cars.” This response is all too common. Both Tommy and much of America still see Kia vehicles as what they remember them to be: “ugly, cheap little cars.” That was yesterday folks. My driving impressions, consumer reviews, and expert reviews say that Kia is now a force to be reckoned with. Consumer Reports rated the Borrego EX V6 higher than the Ford Explorer and the Nissan Pathfinder. Maybe you should get a Kia before demand and prices go up. - UPP.COM

Rumormill: Aluminum and carbon fiber, KERS-equipped BMW M5 cometh?

What does the future have in store for BMW's high-performance M division? For starters, lots and lots of power, along with a smattering of light weight and plenty of cutting-edge technology. This all sounds familiar, but the rumored details coming out of Bimmerfile suggest that the 2011 BMW M5 would be nothing short of revolutionary. Not surprisingly, we're told to expect a version of the twin-turbo V8 that currently powers the M division's hi-po X5 and X6 tallboys with somewhere around 570 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. On top of those prodigious figures may very well be a Kenetic Energy Recovery hybrid setup to recapture wasted energy from braking. The stored power would be used to send an extra shot of power via an electric motor contained in the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The KERS power boost reportedly would be controlled by the driver with a Formula 1-style button on the steering wheel.Further performance would be found by putting the next-gen 5 Series on a diet consisting of a chassis wrought completely in aluminum with carbon fiber used in various body panels and optionally on the roof. We look forward to finding out just how much of this rumormill material turns out to be accurate, and we'll know for sure in early 2011 when the next M5 is slated for introduction. -Autoblog

F30 BMW 3 Series caught winter testing

The next BMW 3 Series, codenamed F30, was filmed at a gas station enduring some cold weather testing. Even in its psychedelic-swirl coating, the mule shows that the 5 Series' growth was no aberration -- the next 3 will be large.
Not long ago he wouldn't have even fit in a 3'er. That's not all der neue 3 takes from its larger sibling: the elevated hoodline and what appears to be a return to unfussy lines down the side are also noted. We've yet to see much in the way of tech details, but the car will share its chassis with the next 1 Series, and this could be the 3 to receive the full weight of BMW's ActiveHybrid and EfficientDynamics goodies. Whatever engine they've got in this prototype, though, sounds good. - Autoblog

Detroit Preview: 2011 BMW 740 brings six-cylinder power back to the 7

When the latest generation of BMW's big 7 Series went on sale in the U.S. early this year, buyers had a choice of either the marvelous twin-turbocharged and direct-injected 400-hp 4.4-liter V8 or the supremely impressive twin-turbo, 535-hp V12. A hybrid version of the 7 also goes on sale here in a few months, still mated to the V8. Since day one, European drivers have also had a pair of six-cylinder options fueled by either gasoline or diesel. BMW still hasn't committed to a 7 Series diesel for the U.S., but today has confirmed will be getting the sweet gas-powered I-6. The 740i and 740LI both come to the U.S. market in spring 2010 powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six. In 740 trim, the six cranks out 315 hp and 330 pound-feet, up a bit from the 300/300 ratings in the smaller 335i. The 740 engine does retain the direct injection and variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust. This new model also marks the U.S. debut of brake energy regeneration on a non-hybrid BMW. Interestingly, BMW has opted to retain the 7's 6-speed automatic transmission rather than upgrading to the new 8-speed found in the hybrid and the new 5 Series. - Autoblog

2011 Kia Sorento pricing pops up, starts under $20k*

Pricing for the 2011 Kia Sorento has popped up unannounced on the automaker's consumer website, and as it turns out, you can drive a base model off the lot with money to spare for a Subway footlong – minus taxes and all that. At $19,995 for the starter model (*plus $795 in destination charges), you'll get a five-seat unibody crossover with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a manual transmission standard. That engine puts out 175 horsepower and 169 pound-feet of torque and is also standard fitment for the uplevel LX and EX models, but the latter two get automatic transmissions. The top tier model is the EX V6, with a 3.5-liter V6 proffering 276 hp and 248 ft-lb. All of the variants except the base also come in either front-drive or all-wheel drive variants, and there is also a seven-seat version. By the time you get to the grips-at-all-fours EX V6, you're looking at $28,895. The Sorento is meant to "significantly increase [Kia's] share of the utility vehicle market," and with pricing like that, a good ride and healthy tech specs, it's got a good shot.

Kia Soul gets fired up with limited-edition Ignition

Kia wants you to consider its 2010 Soul a template ripe for customization, and if you can't think of funky things to do with it, Kia will be glad to help you. This is the Kia Ignition Soul – the second special edition after the 1,200 Denim Souls released earlier this year – in "scorching" Ignition Orange, with offset black striping and blacked-out 18-inch rims, an alloy gas cap, and a rear spoiler. It starts at $17,500 for the manual, making it $200 more than the Denim. But you won't complain about equipment: upgraded stereo, moon roof, keyless remote entry, tinted windows, cruise control, Bluetooth, and then some. - Autoblog

Detroit Preview: BMW to unveil faster Z4 sDrive35is, almost an M

When BMW launched the new Z4 early this year, they made it clear that, unlike the last Z4 and the Z3 before it, there were no plans to create an M version this time around. Of course, forgoing the M nomenclature doesn't mean that BMW won't create a faster Z4 than what's currently in showrooms. In fact, the first of those faster roadsters will debut next month at the Detroit Auto Show. The Z4 sDrive35is is based on the existing 35i, with its delicious twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six. Compared to the existing turbo Z4, the new model gets a higher-flow intake and the turbos are allowed to spin up to higher boost pressures, resulting in an 11 percent bump in both power and torque output. The '35is now makes 335 hp and 332 pound-feet. In fact, for brief bursts, the 35is can crank up the boost even higher resulting in short periods of up to 369 pound-feet of torque. BMW claims the Z4 sDrive35is will get to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. Other features of the 35is include revised electric electric power steering programming, a standard dual-clutch gearbox, and brake energy regeneration. Visually, the 35is wears some M Sport aero and suspension bits and sees its ride height dropped 0.4 inches lower than the standard 35i. They may not be calling this a full M Roadster, but in most respects, that's exactly what this new model is. - Autoblog.com

Kia designers reportedly still want Soul'ster built - is there a market for it?

Will they build it or won't they? That's the question we've all been asking since Kia showed off its funky Soul'ster concept earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show. We've been hearing rumblings that there's a solid push from inside the Korean automaker's own ranks to put the little trucklet into production, and it appears that's still the case.Speaking to our friends at PickupTrucks.com at the LA Auto Show, Tom Kearns, Kia North America's Chief Designer, said, "Kia's internal design community is firmly behind building the Soul'ster. We'd like to see it happen. There's no official decision to build it but it's still possible."The base Kia Soul starts at $13,995, and though we have no idea what Kia might charge the Soul'ster if it were to make it to U.S. dealerships, the open-bed unibody would likely have its own little niche to itself as it figures to be significantly smaller and cheaper than vehicles like the Honda Ridgeline. - Autoblog.com

Car of the Year for 2009

With a brief press release and a trophy handoff at the LA Auto Show, car pricing authority NADAguides.com has heaped the first of what we could be many accolades upon the stylish and affordable 2010 Kia Forte and Kia Forte Koup by naming the duo their Car of the Year for 2009. Citing the pair's "best in class" features and stylish interior and exterior design, the group said these Kia compacts were standout vehicles in a pretty impressive field. Other contenders for the crown included such significant and praiseworthy vehicles as the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Mercedes-Benz E350 and Nissan 370Z Roadster. In our own review of the Kia Forte, we praised its styling, build, layout and performance, and especially its budget-minded pricing, so we see where NADA is coming from. Sometimes, we have to scratch our heads a bit when one of these sorts of awards are announced, but in this case, we certainly think the cars are deserving.

Spy Shots: 2011 VW Jetta Sedan

After spending time with the Jetta sedan last year, we came away mostly impressed by its performance and looks. V-Dub's bread-and-butter model is handsome enough to keep buyers interested, but every design gets stale and after wearing the same duds since 2004, VW is working on all-new sheetmetal for the 2011 model year.KPG caught the new Jetta Sedan undergoing hot-weather testing in Arizona, and while most of the shots show little more than swaths of black camo, the heat and wind worked away at the adhesive to reveal crisper lines, a swoopier roof, a more angled rear side window and some snazzy looking taillights. VW is calling the revised Jetta its "New Compact Sedan" and the Jetta name is in no danger of being changed. Expect the 2011 Jetta to take aim at the Civic and Corolla with a significant drop in its base price when it goes on sale late next year. - autoblog.com

Americans like White, the world likes Silver in new Color Popularity Report

DuPont has released its annual Color Popularity Report, and for the first time has converged data from across the globe to create a worldwide report on how we, as a species, prefer our cars to be colored. OK, maybe that's a bit hyperbolic, but the new worldwide report confirms that Black, Silver and White reign supreme regardless of borders. The three colors are tightly packed in North America, where White is most popular at 17.8 percent with Black (17 percent) and Silver (16.8 percent) not far behind. Europeans, however, like the sleek look of Black at 27 percent compared to Silver at 19.9 percent and White falling pretty far behind at 10.2 percent. Different regions like different colors, but these three remain at or near the top across the board. Who knows why car buyers the world over seem averse to all the colors of the rainbow. Not us. While we dig a nice metallic Silver, other colors like Red, Blue and even shades of Green have a way of teasing out a car's personality better than the grayscale stuff. If you were shopping for a new car (or are), what colors are at the top of your list?

2010 BMW 5-Series revealed – partially!

These pictures appeared on BimmerPost forums brake the embargo on the new generation of BMW 5-Series F10 which will go on sale in 2010. And the first thing you notice looking at these partially revealing shots is that all that lunacy which made the previous model so different and therefore so popular, is gone! Crazy head lights are a no no in this new model and as expected it looks like a smaller version of the 7er. In fact it seems that BMW wants the new 5-Series to be just a discrete executive saloon, exactly like Mercedes E-class.
The car will be officially and fully unveiled real soon, so stay tuned for more pictures and details on it. And for now just take your time to imagine the rest of the car through the cover!!!

Parents name newborn after their car

A couple have named their new daughter Kia after she was born in the backseat of their Kia automobile.
The British couple was racing to a hospital in the UK when their newborn decided the trip was taking too long.
The baby, who was going to be named Tilley until her early arrival, was born just before her father made it to the hospital.
The umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck, but hospital staff were waiting in the parking lot and quickly cut it off.
Kia arrived two weeks early, weighing 6 lb, 7 oz.
As a bonus to having a healthy third child, the couple was rewarded with a new car from Kia Motors.

Volkswagen Amarok - Not coming to the U.S.

Two months from now, Volkswagen will be expanding its involvement in the annual Dakar Rally in South America. Just as they did last January, factory-backed teams will be competing in the 5.600 mile race through Argentina and Chile. However, this time, those outfits will be fielding four race Touaregs rather than two. Perhaps more interesting is official word that VW's new Amarok pickup truck will be the official support truck of the for the entire rally. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has struck a deal with the race organizers, and as a result, the specially outfitted Amaroks will travel the same route as the competitors carrying media, checking out route conditions, and carrying VW crews and race organizers. The Amarok will be built by VW in Argentina starting in 2010, but the automaker has repeatedly said the truck won't be offered in the U.S. market. Learn more by checking out the official press release after the jump.

BMW defies logic with six-cylinder Concept 6 motorcycle

BMW is known the world over for its excellent brand of inline-six cylinder powerplants. In most cases, those supremely smooth and powerful engines power the German company's cars and trucks. Apparently, that won't always be the case, though, as BMW has just revealed its new Concept 6 motorcycle at the EICMA Show in Milan. As the name implies, the Concept 6 boasts an engine with six cylinders, and the best news is that the mill is destined for a new production model in the near future. Expect to see a replacement for the long-running LT series of touring bikes, bringing BMW more in line with the standard-setting Goldwing from Honda.Looking at the actual concept itself, the chassis appears to be heavily based on the current production K-Series unit, and the powerplant is tilted at the same 55-degree angle as the current four-cylinder. Bodywork is suitable for concept duty, with a futuristic take on the old-school Cafe Racer look.Power? BMW's being a bit coy at the moment, suggesting that it makes as much horsepower as the current 1.3-liter four (over 150, to be sure) and as much torque as any other motorcycle engine in production with a stout 96 lb-ft at 2,000 RPM. With a redline of nearly 9,000... you can imagine that there's plenty of power on tap.

2010 Automobile of the Year: 2010 Volkswagen GTI

Yes, the VW GTI is our Automobile of the Year. Again. The last-generation car got the nod only three years ago and now its successor, the sixth-generation GTI, walks away with the trophy as well. How is it that, for the first time since we started naming an Automobile of the Year exactly twenty years ago, we have deemed a single make and model vehicle worthy of our top award not once, but twice? It's very simple. Because the Volkswagen GTI continues to burn the affordable-enthusiast-car flame like no other vehicle in the world. Because the new, Mark 6 GTI, although only a mild update to the Mark 5 GTI, made a good thing even better. Because, as we pointed out in our February 2007 issue, the GTI is "the right car for our times. Hell, it's the right car for any time." And because, as we also stated three years ago, "what the world really needs now is not cars that are fast, but cars that are practical, fuel-efficient, and fast." Not to mention affordable and fun. The 2010 VW GTI is all this, and more.
We've said it before, but it's worth repeating: It's one thing for an automaker to create a car for fifty, or seventy-five, or a hundred thousand dollars or more that gets our pulses racing. Cars that cost that much certainly better be exciting to drive, rewarding to own, and well-built, with quality interiors. But it's another thing entirely, a real achievement, when an automaker creates a car that starts at only $24,239 - well within the reach of most new-car buyers - that is, as our West Coast editor, Jason Cammisa, says, "just as much fun to drive and with just as much street cred as cars costing three times as much." Volkswagen alone has managed to do this, with varying degrees of success, longer than any other automaker: the first GTI reached the U.S. in 1983 and single-handedly created the whole "pocket rocket" genre. Lots of other cars, most recently two successive generations of the Mazdaspeed 3, have attempted to replicate the GTI formula, but none have quite cracked the code.
The key to that code, of course, is the blend of athleticism, practicality, and performance that was the basis of the original GTI and which was resurrected so well in the Mark 5 edition. In 2007, we grooved to the remarkable 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and even went so far as to say that we might take the dual-clutch DSG transmission over the standard six-speed manual. Both gearbox choices have carried over to the 2010 car, but it's a little-known fact that the 2.0T engine was, as of mid-2008, new. Code-named EA888, it's still a 2.0-liter turbo four, and it still makes 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque in the GTI, but it reflects a ground-up redesign of VW's four-cylinder engine and offers as its biggest benefit improved fuel economy. The 2007 GTI with DSG was rated at 22/29 mpg by the EPA, while the 2010 GTI DSG jumps to 24/32 mpg. Underneath its attractive new sheetmetal, the GTI is pretty much the same car as it was before, but a bigger rear antiroll bar effectively eradicates the car's understeer on the racetrack. VW also added so-called XDS programming to the stability control system to mimic a limited-slip differential, helping the GTI put its power down more efficiently. And as good as the GTI is on the road, with crisp steering, a supercommunicative chassis, and a firm but well-damped ride, on the track the car is a revelation. During our Automobile of the Year and All-Stars evaluation drive program, we drove a rich selection of the hottest new cars for 2010 during a day at GingerMan Raceway in southwest Michigan, including a Chevrolet Camaro SS, a Ford Mustang GT, a Porsche Panamera S, a Jaguar XFR, a BMW Z4, and a Porsche Cayman S. As exhilarating as they all were, the GTI was not in the least bit out of its league as it jostled among them on GingerMan's entertaining road course. Check out the logbook commentary from pit lane: "Remarkably competent on the track," said tech editor Don Sherman. "Superb handling and good feedback," seconded road test coordinator Mike Ofiara, who has a Mark 3 and a Mark 5 GTI at home. "Oodles of fun," enthused contributor Preston Lerner, adding, "front-wheel drive never seemed to be an issue." Copy editor Rusty Blackwell ordained it "the best slicer and dicer on the market today," while editor-in-chief Jean Jennings succinctly called it "a superb little rocket." Before we hit the track, Cammisa bemoaned the fact that stability control cannot be fully switched off, but even he admitted, at the end of the day, that "it's really a nonissue, as it still lets you get away with murder."
The GTI also distinguishes itself from other pretenders to the pocket-rocket throne with its interior, which we already admired in the Mark 5, especially the retro plaid upholstery (happily, it carries over to the Mark 6, and leather is optional). "The interior of the Mark 6," enthused Cammisa, "is a huge improvement on something that really didn't need much help to begin with." Luxury doesn't come at the expense of function, though: "I love the firmly bolstered seats, the flat-bottomed steering wheel with red stitching and aluminum accents, the driving position, and the great outward visibility," noted senior editor Joe Lorio. "And the back seats are spacious, with room for a six-footer to sit behind a six-foot driver."
Pocket rockets like the GTI have a reputation of being cars for callow young men, and indeed we have a few of those on our staff. But what's cool about the 2010 VW GTI is its universal appeal. From our editors who were not yet born when the GTI debuted in 1983, to those of us in our forties, to septuagenarian design editor Robert Cumberford, who calls the GTI "a perpetual good-value proposition for performance and practicality," we all like and admire the GTI and would happily have one in our own garages.
At a time when the world's economy is in shambles and fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are on everyone's minds, there remains only one car that ticks all the enthusiast boxes without setting off a single wretched-excess alarm. That's the Volkswagen GTI, and that's why it is, once again, Automobile Magazine's Automobile of the Year.

New spy shots of the 2011 Kia Sportage

Spy photographers have caught another prototype of the third generation Kia Sportage crossover. This time, the new-look Sportage has not been spotted in Korea, but near Kia’s R&D centre in Germany, which is responsible to take on Sportage’s design, powertrain and handling development.
Even though the exterior is covered with heavy camouflage, it is evident that new exterior design is a huge step up from the current model. Details that stand out on the 2011 Sportage are a roof line slightly lower than with the current model, short front and rear overhangs, sleeker side profile, stretched headlamps, as well as interestingly shaped windshield!

2009 SEMA: Kia shows its Sinister Soul

LAS VEGAS, November, 2009 – Kia Motors America (KMA) returns to the Las Vegas Convention center and brings stylized and enhanced concept vehicles for display at the 2009 SEMA Show.
Also returning this year to the KMA booth are DJ-spun tunes by a local artist to help fully showcase the enthusiast-focused White Forte sedan and Black “Sinister” Soul, based on the highly popular compact sedan and urban passenger vehicles launched earlier this year.“The SEMA Show offers manufacturers the freedom to really push the boundaries of customization, which is exactly what we have done with the White Forte concept and Black Sinister Soul concept,” said Michael Sprague, vice president of marketing, KMA. “These two vehicles expand upon the design evolution of the Kia brand and convey the extensive personalization and customization options we provide for consumers and tuners.”Black “Sinister” SoulBased on the emotion-evoking and highly personalized Soul urban passenger vehicle, the Black “Sinister” Soul offers aftermarket enthusiasts an even more aggressive stance than the production version. Lowered and enhanced with 20-inch black rims with machined accents and smoked-out headlamps and tail lamps, the Black “Sinister” Soul presents an impressively menacing profile.A matte sinister black exterior paint job by Buck Wild Designs with Spectral gray accents and black-out custom trim, the Sinister Soul is like none other on the road. Inside is an all-black color scheme with silver-gray accents on the upper seatbacks, as well as an upgraded sport shifter to complete the look. Also special to the Sinister Soul is the 11-speaker 1,300-watt sound system, provided by Infinity Audio Systems. For the serious audiophile and enthusiast, Infinity outfitted the Sinister Soul with powerful performance and space-efficient components. The advanced Infinity Kappa Series Class-D full-range 500-watt amplifier drives 125 watts per channel through four channels. Two Reference Series 6-1/2-inch two-way loudspeakers and two Reference Series 6-1/2-inch component systems deliver increased bass output and higher efficiency, along with edge-driven textile dome tweeters for greater power handling and reduced distortion at high output levels. For those looking to up the bass with low-frequency effects, Infinity employed a pair of 12-inch single voice coil (SVC) subwoofers, driven separately by an 800-watt amplifier. Both subwoofers and both amplifiers are housed in a specially-designed, sealed enclosure with a surprisingly compact footprint. The subwoofer enclosure has been designed to fit into the rear of the Soul hatch area and can be easily removed if the extra transportation or storage space is needed.White Forte SedanJoining the black Sinister Soul this year at SEMA is a sleek, modified concept of the Forte sedan. Sporting 18-inch 5Zigen wheels, a custom catback exhaust and a lowered stance, this new Forte concept offers a decidedly spunkier profile aimed directly at the tuner crowd. The concept version also benefits from a Kia-designed accessory body kit and rear spoiler, as well as a custom paint job with blacked-out roof and side mirrors. The upgraded interior with gunmetal accents and a carbon fiber sport shifter also improve upon the already technologically-focused interior of the production Forte. For the enthusiast and audiophile, Infinity Sound Systems outfitted the White Forte concept with a nine-speaker, 360-watt sound system with a subwoofer built into a custom enclosure on the right side of the trunk. http://blogs.automotive.com/6602250/auto-shows/2009-sema-kia-shows-its-sinister-soul-white-forte/index.html

Jetta TDI Cup ‘Street’ Edition Racing Into Dealer Showrooms Soon
HERNDON, Va., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ — Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced the Jetta TDI Cup “Street” Edition will be available in dealer showrooms January 2010. The concept debuted in Las Vegas during the 2008 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show. Following the SEMA show the concept was displayed at TDI Cup races throughout the country, where it was well received by enthusiasts and consumers alike.
“Since our inaugural TDI Cup series in 2008 we have received numerous inquiries as to whether or not we would offer a TDI Cup replica vehicle,” said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “We’re thrilled to announce that a special edition Jetta TDI Cup Street Edition will be available in dealer showrooms early next year. What makes this special edition so unique is that it features the optional, race inspired, TDI Cup body kit package combined with our clean diesel engine. The Jetta TDI Cup Street Edition is one exceptional special model that is as fun-to-drive as it is to look at,” added Barnes.
The similarities between the TDI Cup race car and the “Street” Edition equipped with the optional TDI Cup Edition Kit are apparent at first glance — the TDI Cup “Street” Edition Kit features the front bumper, side skirts and rear valance that are found on the TDI Cup race cars. The enhancements to the TDI Cup “Street” Edition go well beyond cosmetics. All “Street” Edition Jetta TDI’s feature larger brakes with red calipers, sway bars and European sport tuned suspension from the performance oriented GLI.
The TDI Cup “Street” Edition is powered by the award winning 2.0-liter clean diesel engine that produces 140 horsepower and an impressive 236 lbs.-ft. of torque. The engine makes use of an advanced electronically controlled turbocharger and common rail direct injection technology, and can be mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or the highly acclaimed DSG® transmission.
Other standard upgrades on the Jetta TDI Cup “Street” Edition include sport seats with Interlagos cloth, and a leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel that features paddle shifters when equipped with the DSG transmission. Completing this dynamic special edition is a set of 18 inch Charleston wheels with performance all-season tires. This special edition starts around $25,000–staying true to the brands mantra of offering affordable German engineering that is a whole lot of fun to drive.
The Jetta TDI Cup “Street” Edition, like the Jetta TDI, Jetta SportWagen TDI, Golf TDI and Touareg TDI qualifies for an Advanced Lean Burn Technology Motor Vehicle Federal Income Tax Credit. The tax credit on the “Street” Edition is $1,300.
Like all 2010 models, the Jetta TDI Cup “Street” Edition also comes standard with Volkswagen’s Carefree Maintenance Program, with this program there are no charges for the scheduled maintenance described in the vehicle’s maintenance booklet for the length of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty — three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.via egmcartech.com

Motor Trend First Test: 2010 Volkswagen Golf

Golf VI, as the 2010 Volkswagen Golf is known to model trivia buffs, arrives a year earlier than expected and marks somewhat less of a transformation than were its four predecessors. The styling is all-new inside and out, but the chassis and running gear mostly carry over with minor tweaks, the laserlike focus of which was primarily in two areas: to improve refinement and efficiency and to lower the cost of production. We're happy to report abundant evidence of the former and little or no indication of the latter.

The sleeker styling shows off the new face of VW, as envisioned by design boss Walter Da Silva, with strong horizontal themes in the front and rear graphics. A pronounced shoulder just below the window sills catches the light and lends a butch, bulldog stance on the road. To these eyes, the overall look is about as upscale as two-box cars get, and to the wind it looks ever so slightly slipperier than before (the drag coefficient drops from 0.32 to 0.31). Elsewhere on the refinement front, heroic noise-reduction measures like thicker, acoustic glass from the B-pillar forward, better sound deadening material on the firewall, and new door seals reportedly render this the quietest Golf ever. The claimed improvement is 6 decibels less racket under the noisiest operating conditions (third gear at higher revs). The transformation is most striking on the 2.5-liter, which now shares a lot less of its unpleasant five-cylinder moan with the occupants. Icing on the cake: Despite the sound deadening measures, overall curb weights actually drop about 20 pounds.

All three U.S.-bound engines (the base 2.5-liter inline-five, the 2.0-liter clean-diesel TDI four, and the GTI's 2.0-liter turbo TSI four) receive friction-reducing measures, like switching from a belt-and-chain cam drive to chain-only drive of the cams, balance shafts and oil pump; adoption of new high-pressure die-cast pistons, and an induction-hardened crankshaft. Output levels are largely unchanged, but fuel economy notches slightly upward and in some cases the torque curves are widened (the GTI turbo's torque plateau is achieved 100 rpm earlier, at 1700 rpm). Base cars add one or two EPA city mpg based on transmission, while the DSG-equipped GTI improves by 2 city/3 highway mpg.

Tokyo 2009: Subaru Legacy B4 GT300 is pure JDM awesomeness

Our jaws literally dropped when we spotted this car in the Subaru booth here at the Tokyo Motor Show. The concoction of carbon fiber spoilers, wings and widened fenders seen here is the Legacy B4 GT300 racecar that is set to compete in Japan's Super GT series next year. The car actually made its racing debut at Fuji Speedway last month, and even though previous driveline problems prevented this racer from making an even earlier debut, the B4 GT300 managed 300 trouble-free kilometers to finish a respectable 18th place. As for specs, the Legacy B4 GT300 features a 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer-four that pumps out more than 300 horsepower. With all-wheel drive, a six-speed sequential transmission, and a curb weight of just over 2800 pounds, we imagine it's an absolute blast to pilot around the track. - Autoblog.com

Subaru Impreza WRX STI Carbon at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show

Subaru officially debuted its latest creation at the Tokyo Motor Show – the Impreza WRX STi Carbon. The new sport hatchback, which is based on the A-Line model, has a roof made of carbonfiber, giving the car better hp/weight ratio and lowering the center of gravity. In turn, this leads to better traction and handling.
In addition, Subaru updated the interior by using more luxurious materials thus upping the comfort level of passengers. Another feature that makes the new Impreza WRX STi Carbon stand out is the 5-speed automatic gearbox, which is a precedent for the WRX STi models. There may be hardcore fans who wouldn’t appreciate the changes but the company is well aware of that and counters that it seeks to provide a higher degree of comfort for its customers. Two engines are available in the option list for Subaru Impreza WRX STi Carbon: a 2.0-litre turbo with 308hp and 422Nm of torque and a 2.5-litre turbo with 300hp and maximum torque of 407Nm. The new Subaru WRX STi Carbon will be unveiled for the audience on October 24. Pricing will be announced later this year.

2010 Motor Trend Sport/Utility Of The Year: Subaru Outback

2010 Motor Trend Sport/Utility Of The Year: Subaru Outback
Find the Hidden SUV: An Act So Good, Even if You Know How It's Done You Can't See It
October 16, 2009
/ By Arthur St. Antoine
/ Photography by Wesley Allison

It's right there in the photo: a spacious, tough, thoroughly modern, exceedingly capable sport/utility vehicle. You're forgiven if all you can see is a svelte station wagon. There's magic at work here.
For the first time since any of us can recall, an automaker has claimed the Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year title two years in a row. Last fall, deftly balancing efficiency and size, the all-new 2009 Subaru Forester went home with the Golden Calipers trophy. For 2010, fighting off several tough adversaries -- and undoubtedly some unspoken but very real bias among our judges against repeat winners -- Subaru's new, fourth-generation Outback scored a decisive 10-1 victory in the final voting.

Some vehicles arrive at our annual "Of the Year" competitions (car, sport/utility, truck) staking early claims to a win via bulging engine muscle, beguiling gizmos, fashion-runway sheetmetal. The Outback isn't one of those. In fact, it slipped nearly unnoticed through our early walkarounds; the pre-drives chatter seemed to focus elsewhere -- the ZDX's spaceship lines, the Q5's comparison test-winning moves, the Lincoln's mighty yet efficient EcoBoost V-6. But then, one by one, our test drivers took the Outback into the field. And the buzz began to shift. Once again, it seemed, Subaru was successfully reshaping the very definition of "sport/utility vehicle" -- melding the multi-mission prowess of true SUVs with the driving refinement, fuel-frugality, and easy access of wagons and sedans. Once again, our judges began taking extra notes.

In the U.S., the Legacy Outback wagon is now gone (it'll still be sold in Japan and elsewhere), replaced by this bigger, sleeker rig that drops the Legacy name altogether. The 2010 Outback platform is new, 2.8 inches longer in wheelbase, shoulders broader by two inches, front and rear overhangs nipped by two inches each to enhance off-road attacks. Though the overall package is shorter than its predecessor, interior room is up seven percent (thanks in part to a raised roof) -- and rear-seat legroom climbs by a conspicuous four inches. "Roomy back seat -- lots of legroom and headroom," writes senior editor Ron Kiino. "Huge cargo hold too. At 34.3/71.3 cubic feet (back seat up/down), it's got more cargo room than the Terrain and Equinox twins." Maximum cargo capacity, in fact, tops both a "classic SUV" like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota's big "it's-not-a-crossover-it's-a-car" Venza (see chart on page 4).

Kia dealers from across nation tour new West Point assembly plant

Activity at the Kia Motors assembly plant in West Point is picking up as the start of production draws closer.
The South Korean company is on schedule to begin mass production of the Sorento Crossover Utility Vehicle the middle of next month in its first U.S. plant.
Last week, about 850 Kia dealers from across the country toured the plant and took the new vehicle for test drives.

“It went well,” Kia Motors Georgia Human Resources Director and Administrator Randy Jackson said Monday.
It went better than that, said Kia AutoSport of Columbus General Manager Ed Braun, who was in the group.
“The dealers were ecstatic about the new product,” Braun said. “The new Sorento is going to be awesome.”
Kia Parkway, which runs between the plant and Interstate 85 was closed for the dealers to test drive the redesigned Sorento. An obstacle course was set up so the dealers could get a better feel for the vehicle.
The dealers also got a tour of the plant and the production process.
“Most dealers have seen plants, but I don’t think they have seen one like this one,” Braun said. “It is massive, but it also has the latest and greatest technology.”
The Kia plant now has 1,200 employees, Jackson said. It will employ about 1,250 hourly workers by the time production begins. That is half the 2,500 jobs that were promised when Georgia landed the plant in 2006.
Another 1,250 hourly workers will be hired early next year as the manufacturer gears up for a second production line.
Jackson said a month ago that Kia was considering reopening the application process as the second round of hiring begins. Two years ago, more than 43,000 people applied with Kia through the Georgia Department of Labor. That pool is what Kia has been drawing on for hires.
No decision has been finalized on reopening the process, though Jackson said Kia and state officials were meeting this week to discuss the matter.

Green Test Drive: Kia Forte has bold look, eco-friendly manners

By Clint Williams
Green Right Now

The 2010 Kia Forte, an all-new offering from the Korean automaker, is a handsome entry in a category filled with cute. Crisp lines and swept-back headlamps give this compact car a look much bolder than that of competitors such as the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla.
But that bold look doesn’t mean bold driving dynamics. Driving the Forte is pleasant enough, but a bit bland.

The Forte comes in three trim levels – LX, EX and SX. The LX and EX are powered by a 2-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 156 horsepower. The SX has a 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter inline four. The four-speed automatic transmission in the EX test car is calibrated for fuel-efficiency, not fun. The standard five-speed manual might coax a bit more out of the engine.
While not a lot of fun to drive, the Forte is frugal. The EPA fuel economy estimate is 25 mpg in city driving and 34 mpg in highway driving. We drove from Atlanta to Huntsville, Ala., on a little more than half a tank. Fuel economy is even better if you buy the optional Fuel Economy Package, available on the EX model. The package includes a five-speed automatic transmission, Motor Drive Power Steering (MPDS), “smart” alternator, silica tires and aero enhancements. These improvements bump the EPA fuel economy estimates to 27/36 mpg and a combined fuel economy of 30 mpg.

The Forte is frugal before the first trip to the gas pump, offering a lot of features for not a lot of money. The base LX trim has a base sticker price of $13,695 (and no air-conditioning), but most people will want to start with the EX trim with a base sticker price of $16,795.
The EX list of standard features includes air conditioning; power windows and door locks; remote keyless entry; steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls; six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system outfitted with SIRIUS Satellite Radio capabilities with three months free service; iPod input jack and USB port. Safety features include front seat-mounted and side curtain airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with antilock brake system, brake assist and electronic stability control.

The interior is roomy for four adults and thoughtfully laid out. Rear storage is limited to one seat pocket. The front seats, however, are slightly concave, like a shallow inverse C, and won’t offer some riders decent shoulder and neck support.

But if the seats fit, the Kia Forte represents a bargain. A good-looking one at that.

2010 Volkswagen GTI Preview

The 2010 Volkswagen GTI is finally making its way to the U.S. in Mark VI form, and though it's down 10 horsepower on its international-spec doppelganger, it's actually quicker 0-60 mph. And with a new exterior, interior upgrades and a price right on top of the old GTI, the 2010 model stands to win even more fans here in the States.
The powerplant under the GTI's hood should be familiar to GTI fans, with its turbocharged four-cylinder direct-injection 2.0-liter displacement cranking out 200 horsepower from 5,100 rpm to 6,000 rpm and 207 pound-feet of torque from 1,800 rpm straight through to 5,000 rpm. That's good for 6.8 seconds 0-60 mph with the six-speed manual and 6.7 seconds with the optional six-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox. Top speed is limited to 130 mph in U.S. models.
Like any good hot hatch, it's not all about power and speed, however. The GTI gets surprisingly good fuel efficiency, especially with the DSG gearbox, which rates 24/32 mpg. The six-speed manual isn't quite as efficient around town, though it draws nearer on the highway, earning 21/31 mpg EPA estimates. With better efficiency and better performance, VW is making it hard to choose the traditional manual transmission in the 2010 GTI.
For the Mark VI Golf VW stayed well within the lines, essentially stylizing the existing body shape to look a bit more current. As usual for the GTI, the front end gets a honeycomb grille, a GTI badge on the passenger side and blacked out lower front fascia ductwork. Two halogen fog lamps and reworked teardrop headlights (HID Xenons available optionally) lend an aggressive face to this capable little hatch.
Along the sides, new black skirts subtly blend the front-to-rear lines. A complete absence of side moldings makes for a smoother, more streamlined profile. At the rear, the new tail lights feature smoked brake lenses and clear reverse and turn signals, letting buyers skip a common tuning step. The rear bumper also gets reshaped for the 2010 GTI, and a blacked-out diffuser integrated underneath.
Standard 17x7-inch alloy wheels and all-season performance tires can be upgraded to 18x7.5-inch alloys with a choice of performance summer or all-season tires.
Those wheels and tires are mounted to McPherson struts up front with lower control arms and tubular anti-roll bars to help keep the tires in contact with the road. The rear gets a four-link independent suspension, making room for more cargo than alternative setups by allowing for a larger rear hatch opening. VW says the electro-mechanical power rack-and-pinion steering setup induces good on-center feel, and provides good feedback to inspire confidence in the driver. The final aspect of the GTI's performance package is its brake system: 312 mm discs up front and 286 mm discs out back grasped by red-painted calipers provide sure-footed stops.
Inside, the 2010 GTI gets heavily bolstered front seats wrapped in patterend "sport fabric" with red-and-white double stitching. Standard manual adjustments including lumbar support are included, while the three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel has a new embossed center, aluminum trim on the spokes and perforated leather sections along the top and bottom.
A redesigned instrument panel joins the 2010 GTI, adding chrome trim to the big tach, and re-arranging other gauges. In the center of the display is a multi-function display that provides all the info you expect from a modern car. Brushed metal and metallic accents are spread throughout the cabin, including the gearshift, center stack controls and stereo.
The standard audio system is an eight-speaker satellite-capable six-disc CD changer unit with build-in iPod, auxiliary and Bluetooth support. The base stereo can be upgraded to a 300-watt Dynaudio Lite system as well. A touch-screen navigation system with a 6.5-inch screen and 30-gigabyte harddrive can also be added, which also brings an SD-card slot and DVD playback to the table.
A full complement of electronic safety and driving aids are to be found in the GTI's ECU: ABS, ESP and TPMS are standard fare, while Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) and Engine Braking Assist (EBA) add to the usual list. All-new for the Mark VI GTI is the Electronic Limited Slip system dubbed XDS. This system electronically monitors individual wheel sensors and sends more torque to the wheels with the most grip for extra traction and performance.
Passive safety features include the VW Prevent and Preserve system of 40 different safety features, including six airbags, special head restraints, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, and in the five-door GTI, optional rear side airbags and rear outboard seatbelt pre-tensioners.

2009 Tokyo Auto Show: Subaru Takes Wing With Hybrid Tourer Concept

TOKYO — Subaru will swoop in to the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show with a striking gullwing Hybrid Tourer Concept that straddles the gulf between sex appeal and a commitment to green values.
Parent Fuji Heavy Industries isn't saying whether this four-passenger concept will ever see the light of a showroom. It describes the Hybrid Tourer as "a new proposal for the future of [the] grand touring car."
The all-wheel-drive concept gets a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed direct fuel-injection turbo gas engine, an unusual hybrid two-motor system and a high-performance lithium-ion battery. The two-motor system bundles a power/drive motor in the front and a drive motor in the rear. During normal driving, the front engine is primarily used, noted Subaru in a statement. At start-up and "extremely low speeds when fuel efficiency is low, the rear motor is used primarily," it said.
Subaru did not provide any information on the fuel economy of its concept.
The cabin gets a dashboard that can be moved up and down and a special windshield that cuts down on driver eyestrain.
Another notable vehicle on the Subaru stand at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show will be the Impreza WRX STI Carbon. This vehicle has carbon material in the roof and is spun off the WRX STI A-Line model with a five-speed automatic transmission. Subaru says the use of carbon material translates into "a significant weight reduction and a lower center of gravity."

Frankfurt 2009: 2010 Volkswagen Phaeton Exclusive makes our inner plutocrat swoon

When it comes to the Phaeton, we really don't care what anyone else thinks. The only justification we'll offer is that back in the early 2000s, VW's ubermensch Ferdinand Piech took off the calf-skin gloves and dropped the mother of all gauntlets. He told commanded engineers to build A) the very best high performance hypercar the world had ever seen, and, B) an equally superb luxury sedan. The results, as you may have guessed, were the Veyron and the Phaeton. A little bit of this high high-falutin' zeitgeist rubbed off on the Touareg as well -- especially the twin-turbo TDI V10 monster. The whole Phaeton can'o'worms is quite messy in the States. To put it bluntly, the grand sedan completely failed. Still, anyone that's spent so much as thirty seconds in the back seat knows that the Phaeton's failure in WalMart country had nothing to do with the Phaeton. Proof? Volkswagen, who by year's end is projected to be the largest automaker in the world and therefor knows a thing or two about cars, is bringing the Phaeton back to our red, white und blue shores. This particular Phaeton Exclusive (featuring the universe's glossiest, deepest and darkest black paint) is actually sporting the 2007 facelift. But you can rest easy, secure in the knowledge we'll be getting the new Phaeton when it returns to the US in 2011. - Autoblog.com

Rumormill: BMW proceeding with development on mid-engine Z10?

For many, it may seem hard for an automaker to claim the mantle of "The Ultimate Driving Machine" without a truly exhilarating supercar to act as a halo to define the brand. That could explain why, following previous reports that it had canned any plans for a mid-engine supercar, new reports suggest that BMW is proceeding with development of just such a vehicle.Tentatively dubbed Z10, the most ultimate of driving machines would, according to the latest churns of the rumormill, take advantage of lightweight materials – including carbon fiber, aluminum and magnesium – to keep weight down, while offering more space inside than a Porsche 911. The jury's still out on what engine would find itself placed in the middle of the taut chassis, with the company's award-winning V10 reportedly axed in favor of a twin-turbo six (in either V or inline configuration) delivering somewhere in the vicinity of 450 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed dual clutch gearbox.Adaptable aerodynamics, a supplemental hybrid electric motor and thermal-dynamics system are also tipped to be part of the package, and we wouldn't be surprised to see some of the styling elements from the new Vision EfficientDynamics concept make their way into the production vehicle. The supercar is supposedly projected to bow with a $110,000 sticker price about five years from now... that is, if it's actually ever produced at all.

New Subaru models earn top IIHS safety ratings

The 2010 Subaru Legacy and 2010 Subaru Outback have just been called 'Top Safety Picks' by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Both of the popular models have been revised for the 2010 model year with more space, features and safety than last year's model.
The "Top Safety Pick' rating is one of the industry's highest accolades for crash-impact performance.
It's only given to models that ace all impact tests and come with life-saving Electronic Stability Control, or ESC.
"Recognizing vehicles at the head of the class for safety helps consumers distinguish the best overall choices without having to sort through multiple test results," said Institute president Adrian Lund.
Lund also points out that the ESC technology more and more automakers are using can actually help prevent an accident from taking place at all. ESC is standard on all 2010 Legacy and Outback models.
"Thanks to testing by groups like the IIHS, Subaru customers know they can depend on us for the highest levels of occupant protection," said Katsuhiro Yokoyama, president and CEO of Subaru Canada. "The fact that 2010 Impreza, Forester, and Tribeca have also achieved Top Safety Pick status is both a tribute to the people who design and engineer our vehicles, and a powerful signal to consumers that we're committed to building vehicles that are safe and durable as well as fun to drive."
Subaru attributes the test results, at least partially, on their safety-engineered 'ring' body structure.
In an impact, this tough structure sends crash impact forces around the cabin, rather than through it.

Want an Eco-Friendly Car? Buy a BMW!

If your carbon footprint is an important consideration to you when you're car shopping, you may picture yourself in a Toyota Prius. Or perhaps, if you pay close attention to the auto industry, you've got your eye on a Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf. These cars aren't likely to win you any stoplight drag races, but their fuel economy ratings make them the greenest rides on the road, right?
Not according to Dow Jones. In their estimation, if you really care about your carbon footprint, you'll buy a fine European sport sedan with a turbocharged engine and a fourteen speaker stereo. Or perhaps a V8-powered roadster.
Autoblog explains, "That's the case if you're consulting the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World, which has declared BMW Group to be the ‘most sustainable automobile company worldwide.'" The German luxury automaker "has won the title for five years in a row now. In fact, BMW reminds us it is the only automaker that has been listed on the Index since it was created in 1999."
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index considers the environmental and social impact of a company's operations as a whole, including the entire product lifecycle from design through the end of their lifecycle. In a press release, Dow Jones shows BMW to be above the auto industry average in every category it rates, including Operational Eco-Efficiency, Climate Strategy, Carbon Strategy and the environmental standards the company maintains for its suppliers.
The Motor Report notes, "Since 2000, BMW has listed sustainability among its core strategic principles, focusing on the development of fuel-saving and alternative vehicle concepts - such as the EfficientDynamics range and the recently revealed VISION Concept - through to clean production processes and green recycling practices."
BMW hasn't focused heavily on environmental and social concerns in its marketing, but they may play a bigger role in future advertising efforts. After all, Autoblog points out, "There's a lot of competition to be seen as the world's greenest automaker - just look at the branding efforts surrounding the Toyota Prius or the Chevrolet Volt for examples."
Not to mention, those cars can't exactly keep up with an M5 when the road gets twisty.

2011 Volkswagen Jetta – Spied

When asked this week if the company is going to change the name of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, its best-selling car, U.S. CEO Stefan Jacoby said, “We are not that stupid.” Any speculation that the so-called New Compact Sedan (NCS) will wear a different badge can end.
Our spy shots of the sixth-generation Jetta show a sexy roof line and simple, attractive flanks. What you can’t see are front- and rear-end styling, but expect a much crisper look than the current, bulbous Jetta. Allegedly, the new Jetta will retain VW driving characteristics. The 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine will continue as the base engine for now, and the company’s excellent 2.0-liter turbo-diesel will be on offer, too. The gasoline-fired turbo-four may continue in the Jetta, but it is an expensive engine for VW because it is imported from Europe. Looking forward, VW will bring production of smaller, forced-induction motors to North America as fuel-economy regulations get stricter.

2010 Kia Sorento

Kia announces that it will build the all-new Kia Sorento at its US manufacturing plant, located in Georgia.
Introduced in 2002, the original Kia Sorento midsize SUV marked a huge step forward for Kia Motors, challenging established brands and beginning the process of changing perceptions of Kia Motors as solely a maker of small cars.
That process will continue with the arrival of the all-new Kia Sorento CUV, which is scheduled to begin rolling off the assembly line at Kia’s first U.S. plant - Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) in West Point, Georgia - later this year, and offers improved fuel economy and more passenger room and seating capacity than the previous model.
As Kia Motors America continues to make dramatic market share gains in the U.S., the new Kia Sorento will continue the brand’s design-led evolution, following the recent introduction of several dynamically styled vehicles including the Soul urban passenger vehicle, the Forte compact sedan, and Kia’s first-ever two-door coupe, the Forte Koup.
“It will be a historic milestone when the first Sorento rolls off the assembly line at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia later this year,” said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing, KMA. “Our first domestically built vehicle, the all-new Sorento will be built by team members who have undergone rigorous training and who have great pride in their newly learned skills.”

Oops!....BMW’s New Concept Vehicle Makes Early Appearance

With Frankfurt fast approaching, automakers are beginning to bring their latest creations out of hiding to put the final touches on them. This poses a problem as it is no easy task to keep a full sized vehicle hidden from prying eyes. This time, it was BMW who was caught in the act of moving a new vehicle, and I must say it looks interesting.

BMW Will Match Cash for Clunkers Rebate on New Diesels

Now, the Cash for Clunkers deals get interesting.
The program, which offers Americans up to $4,500 toward the purchase of a new car when buyers trade in an older, less-efficient car to be scrapped, officially launches today. Automakers have begun to announce a number of promotions tied to the program.
Motor Trend reports, "Until the end of August, BMW will provide $4500 in incentives toward the purchase of a 335d or X5 xDrive35d." The incentives, which the German automaker is calling an "eco-credit," apply whether or not the buyer is able to turn in an older car to cash in on the government's new program. After all, MT notes, the X5 doesn't qualify, since it carries a base price over $45,000. But the 335d does.
The incentives are a surprise from BMW, which usually doesn't discount its cars significantly. Autoblog notes, "When Chrysler started its new "Double CA$H For Your Old Car" promotion that included up to $4,500 in incentives on select vehicles, we weren't that surprised. After all, there are plenty of Chrysler products with at least that much cash on the hood. News that BMW is following suit with the same $4,500 in rebates on the purchase of a diesel powered 335d or X5 is a bit more surprising."
The offer may be a sign, Autoblog muses, of "a lack of acceptance for diesel-powered luxury vehicles in the US." The diesel-powered 3-Series has been a critical success, but car shoppers have not yet joined in press enthusiasm for the cars.
The offer, however, might change some minds. AutoSpies notes that buyers of the diesel-powered 3-Series "also receive a $900 tax credit" intended to stimulate sales of fuel-efficient cars. Combining the $4,500 voucher for a clunker trade-in, BMW's $4,500 "eco credit," and the $900 tax credit, buyers could save nearly $10,000 off the most fuel-efficient 3-Series model. The program runs until August 31.
